Playing around with the very common phrase "picture perfect" and the ancient concept of "don't judge a book by it's cover," 'Picture Imperfect' is a song about masking hardships with superficial smiles. The two main characters in this song are forced to smile for the camera while baring the weights of being in an abusive relationship for one, and battling addiction for the second. I know several people who have been in very similar situations so I know the importance of addressing such issues. But it's much more than those specific situations for me. The overall theme of masking your pain in order to preserve face really hits home. Growing up in a divorced home it seemed like the number 1 goal was to make sure that everyone on the outside thought that everything was great on the inside, even if it killed us.

When people think of Canada, the 1st thing that comes to mind is Toronto. This song is to give awareness to the world that there's more than 1 scene in Canada. Montreal has so many producers and artists that are popping and blowing up, people just don't connect the dots and realize that this new wave of artists are all from Montreal. People outside of Montreal don't realize that we have an active scene out here. We're in Toronto's shadow, and our music doesn't even sound like theirs, at all.

The joke is, whenever we tell people, yeah we're from Montreal, Americans reply, "oh so you know Drake?" and it's like, "No, we're not from Toronto, how are we supposed to know Drake?" It's no disrespect to Toronto by the way, I just want people outside of Canada to know that Montreal needs to be recognized as its own scene. So in this song, I made reference to a lot of Montreal-specific stuff. If Montreal isn't the most multi-cultural city in the world, it's one of them. One of our neighborhoods alone, Cote-Des-Neiges, has over 120 ethnicities living there. All of these ethnicities have developed their own communities here as well. Our Quebecois culture contributes a dash of French to all of these cultures, and all these cultures contribute their own stuff to our Quebecois culture as a whole too.

Whatever your background is in Montreal,

everybody (my generation, anyway) speaks some French, Italian, Haitian-Creole, Jamaican Patois, Arabic, Spanish, Greek, etc.

Our dude from Boston came to MTL for a weekend, and he asked us, "you guys don't find it weird when an Asian shawty comes up to you and speaks full-on French to you?" and we looked at him weird like... "No....?" That shit is normal to us.

This Ain't Toronto serves as what the setting and atmosphere is of the city of Montreal, its culture, and scene. It's a crowd filled with all different faces. What we all have in common is the French influences and that we participate in all of our backgrounds' cultures, like a melting pot. Because Outer Space and This Ain't Toronto provide the introduction, overview, background, setting, atmosphere, and environment, the story of the life of an average Montrealer can now begin with the rest of the EP.
