There must be something in the water in Luzern, the town that label regular Khainz calls home. The Swiss producer has been churning out tremendous, polished dancefloor bombs for over a decade, and this effort has culminated in his third studio album and first since 2012: Fingerprint. If you’ve heard Khainz’s music, you know his tracks are equal parts heavy groove and brilliant sound design. Fingerprint shows the scope of Khainz’s skills with track after track of heavy, club-focused composition that flirts with both delicate, beautiful melodies and savage techno sounds. In a world where many believe that the dance music album is increasingly irrelevant, Khainz proves the contrary with a stunning body of work that sounds like much more than just a collection of tracks. 

The album opens with “Next”, an ominous builder that displays Khainz’s pension for melodic sonic journeys. It’s a powerful start to the record, and the energy builds as we continue into “Tilted Towers”, a heavy techno roller precision crafted for peak moments. The album continues with the beautiful “Reflect”’ then turns again to the dark side with “Dawn Raid”, a heavy collaboration with Suspect One that sounds like sleek, modern techno with classic rave sensibility. The thundering grooves continue with “Reconnect” before giving way to “Pollux”, a master class in melodic techno with its intense, swirling arpeggios. The album’s title track is like a summary of all the sounds on the album, combining the best of Khainz’s production techniques into one bite-size portion. As we get into the tail end of Fingerprint, “Fair Trade” (a collaboration with Jack & Juus) keeps the high energy going, and “Watch Your Step” takes it up a notch with its glistening acid riffs and pumping groove. The album wraps up with “Frequent Avenue”, another Jack & Juus collab that recycles some of the melodic motifs from the album, a rewarding finish for anyone who takes the time to listen to Fingerprint straight through. 

Fingerprint is the summation of years of practice and dedication. It’s near-incomprehensibly consistent, each track sounding enough like the others to flow like an album, but not enough that the music becomes monotonous. It functions like an album should, with each track complementing the sequence and creating something more than the sum of its parts. This is Khainz at his finest, and the title reflects that – it’s his musical fingerprint.

Berliner Raphael Hofman showcases his penchant for dancefloor antics on this rhythm-packed EP featuring Daniel Jaeger as well as Pattern Drama & Jon Lee on remix duties.

The A side sees Hofman in full-on peaking rave mode as the opener raises spirits with a punchy bassline and a sultry vocal that beckons and calls: 'Get lost with me'. Daniel Jaeger dials the groove down and adds scintillating synths, for a more raw experience. 

808 Poetry maintains the same upbeat pace, but brings in a pensive mood with its melodic pads and jolting harmonies. New York's Pattern Drama joins forces with Seatttle-based talent Jon Lee on a heavily syncopated yet instantly attention-grabbing remix.

The latest release on Tash’s Movement Recordings welcomes Hannes Wiehager & Chaum back to the label for their debut EP. Having first appeared in 2018, Swedish artist Hannes Wiehager has amassed an impressive resume, finding a home on Beatfreak Limited, Manual Music and Stripped Recordings. Greek producer Angelos Moutsai aka Chaum has enjoyed a similar rise to success since making his debut in 2016. Releases via Hoomidaas, One Of A Kind and RYNTH have been vehicles for his darker take on melodic house and techno. As frequent studio partners in the past, Hannes and Chaum first appeared on Movement in July of last year with a contribution to the label’s popular ‘Technical Progress’ series. Now as 2021 gets underway the duo make a welcome return with ‘Fallout’ alongside remixes from Khainz and Futur-E. 

Returning to the label and providing the first interpretation of ‘Fallout’ is Khainz. As one of Switzerland’s most recognized electronic music artists, the Luzern resident has found a home on Heinz Music, Iboga Records, Sprout and YoshiToshi. Also a regular on the European festival circuit, Khainz remains one of his country’s most sought after DJs, having played Boom Festival, Rainbow Serpent and others. Having first appeared on the label in 2012 with a remix of Dousk’s ‘Akiki’, Khainz now returns with a powerful rendition of ‘Fallout’. Through distinctive design and heady sonics, the Swiss artist has crafted an excellent complement to the original. A chunkier groove, astral sonics and exotic drums play off each other wonderfully, while a storyboard of cosmic effects advances the narrative. More emotive than its predecessor, the main break opens up into a glowing reservoir of sound, allowing the vocal to breathe and delight, before pushing onwards to a groovy finale.
