Lena Platonos is a pioneer of the Greek electronic music scene of the 1980s. She produced and released her second solo album, ‘Gallop’, in 1985 that we reissued in 2015. The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill. Lena says of ‘Gallop’, “It’s a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it.”
We’ve asked Red Axes to chose their four favorite songs from ‘Gallop’ and create remixes for each one. Red Axes is Tel-Aviv based producers and DJs Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, releasing their own productions and remixes since 2009 on I’m a Cliché, Correspondant and Hivern Discs. The duo was raised on a steady diet of post-punk, new-wave and Italo-disco at fogged out warehouse and basement parties. They’ve transform “Witches” and “And We Hear “I Love You”” into solid dancefloor tools. “No. 9” and “Liqueur Ruby” transport the listener to a hypnotic state tripped out in a psychedelic mist, with the latter featuring middle eastern rhythms by fellow Tel Aviv musicians The Dirty Lizards.
All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket riffs off the original ‘Gallop’ cover, isolating the photograph of Lena layered on a grid backdrop designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a manipulated frame from one of Lena’s music videos. “In an era where we are obsessed with nostalgia, Red Axes achieved something against that grain while still paying homage to the underrated greats that came before them.” – Anthem Magazine

With an arsenal of stellar music releases already under his belt, Ponty Mython serves up the delicious “Pink Tango” EP for Futureboogie.

Having carved out a reputation for some of the finest cosmic house productions on labels like Omena, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials, the Lithuanian based producer delivers three new cuts on this release, which comes ably backed by a remix from Italian producer Fabrizio Mammarella.

On the title track, Alex Pletnev (Ponty Mython), goes for breezy synths and wandering melodies over a chugging mechanical beat and an FM style bassline, whilst Fabrizio Mammarella (Bear Funk/Les Disques De La Mort) toughens things up slightly on his remix, plunging into a darker sound aesthetic for a great reinterpretation of the original.

On “Time Spiral” an unhurried groove is laced with layer upon layer of meditative synths and percussive rolls for a fat dose of eighties soundtrack vibes, whilst EP closer, “Appreciate It While It's Not Too Late”, settles down to a head-nodding pace with funky bass and key melodies and live drum samples for a real earworm of a track.

Israeli producer Eliezer drops 3 cuts of post-punk influenced disco on Days Of Being Wild.

A prominent figure of the underground music scene in Tel Aviv for more than 20 years Eliezer is no stranger to Days Of Being Wild, having released the neurotic and anxious “With Screening” with his partner in crime Middle Sky Boom, back in 2016.
Since then Eliezer has been rather busy, releasing records with Eskimo, Unterman, Prins Thomas imprint Internasjonal (as Midnight Dicers) and La Dame Noir. 

His latest EP Haifa Mafia, released amid world wide confinement and paranoia on your favourite purveyor of disco noir doesn’t stray from his cold wave tendencies - pretty fitting for such dark and strange times. 

All cuts presented here are very much in the Israeli post punk/ wave sound we grew to like. 
There is minimalism and elegance in Eliezer production as well as a nod to retro industrial and electronic music from the early 80’s such as Cabaret Voltaire or Front 242. 
But with a very contagious exotic twist. 
The three tracks on offer here are constructed on repetitive and hypnotic disco bass, dusty percussions and oriental, languid guitar lines all colliding to create an airy and pulsating sonic landscape of dancing melancholia.
Children voices, whispers cascading through echoes, cryptic messages and vaporous synths contribute to the mix and create a dark, moody almost cinematic atmosphere enhanced by the general slow tempos of the tracks.

Closing the EP is an even slower slice of melancholy techno, Belgian producer Strapontin’s remix of Crown Zero chugs along the darkest alleys of clubbing with its claps lost in echoes and guitar trapped in tar, like these dreams where you run but feel like you are standing still, or where you try to escape but never seem to reach the exit.

Write-ups are often taken up with a lot of hyperbole and metaphor, which is totally warranted, apart from the fact that it seems increasingly hard to pen some hype about yourself unless stepping into the role of the 3rd person. We don’t want to be any further away from our fans than we are at this strange time, so let’s bring ourselves, our words, our feelings and thoughts back into the ‘one sheet’ … A space that is usually reserved for a mass of versification, alliteration and premium-promo-plugging (see what we did there ?)

The lead track taken from this EP contains lyrics that go “Fly on there’s a ride, past the fire burning bright…. blah blah blah”. You get the drift right ? It’s throwback, , it’s a stab at indie-pop, brit-rock, shoe gaze and some other non-sensical musical genre terminology, it’s a nod to the 90’s (which we grew up in) But most of all, it’s honestly what we felt like making. Suddenly the idea of making ‘songs’ didn’t only seem so far away from us, it was literally in the same room. Turn this idea into something tangible and you have what we are presenting here… 

So, as we step out into the unknown - feet firmly planted on the ground beneath us - we are happy to finally set this music free. From our minds, through our hands, to our computers and down the pipe on to the wonderful web, here it comes… Ride on dear listener, there is a light 🧡
