Master of Arts Screen: Cinematography – Deep Dive Discussion

Precipice is a world-first binaural narrative podcast series. Its revolutionary use of sound provides an “immersive film for the ears” and opens up a whole new realm in the podcasting space. Lead producers from AFTRS’ international partners and consultants, WNYC (Public Radio New York) and BBC Audio Research, agree it has achieved “innovation firsts” and takes the form to new places.

A trilogy drama: three 20-minute binaural narratives. The non-linear trilogy forms a narrative mosaic that only culminates when all three have been experienced. 

 
Synopsis:
 
Precipice is a three-part binaural podcast thriller series, set over two different time periods in Sydney, Australia and Paris, France.
In three episodes, listeners are taken through the labyrinthine world of psychiatrist Dr Ferenc, and into the past, present and future of her unauthorized and highly unethical creation of false memories in subject Amira. Listeners travel through immersive binaural sound to various locations, from the streets of Paris to urban Sydney student digs, to deep in the Australian coastal bushland. The trilogy forms a narrative mosaic that culminates when all three have been experienced. Precipice includes original choral music performed by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs VOX as theme and leitmotif, providing an extraordinary element to this immersive narrative composition.

Episode 1:
Precipice begins with the story of Amira, an international student studying in Australia, who has become involved in a new therapy study led by Dr Victoria Ferenc. The program is supposed to be helping Amira deal with her anxiety and depression but Amira gets concerned when her closest friend starts to point out unusual behaviour and gaps in Amira’s memory. Amira wants to leave the study, but when she finds out her father, who she thought was dead, is alive and Dr Ferenc knows something about it, she’ll put her concerns on hold to find out more.

Episode 2:
In Episode Two we jump back in time and meet a younger Victoria Ferenc who is working alongside a under a Dr Jani who has a radical idea about manipulating memories. His study involves Dr Ferencs partner, a troubled refugee who can’t shake off the scars of his past. As we follow Dr Ferenc’s questioning of the treatment, a link to Amira is revealed and suddenly our understanding of the present is flipped.

Episode 3:
In Episode Three we return to the present, where Dr Ferenc and Amira are both on a quest to get to the truth of their own pasts, but as it gets harder to imagine the journey ending well for them both, the audience will be asked the question of whether there is every a chance for us to heal the past, if we can’t let go of old grief.
