'Undulate' is a fitting title for it’s all about rhythm and movement. Lush and maximalist, Undulate is a fresh take on the disco-influenced, synth-laden euphoria of Bézier’s world. Undulate comes on the heels of Continuum, his last EP for miv, and too is a force of contagious melody. The first three tracks on Undulate, “Oscilloscope,” “Stroboscope” and “Periscope”, are sonically and conceptually enmeshed and work together to achieve a dynamic scope. “Oscilloscope” opens the EP with brazen techno punctuated by chewy acid, claps, and a dark synth lead. “Stroboscope” feels like a cousin to “Oscilloscope” — they belong to the same family, but have slightly different temperaments. In both, gripping rhythms and synth compel the body to move, but “Stroboscope” is more cosmic and drenched in retro-futurist sentiments. Its defining characteristic is its unapologetic, vibrant synth melody, which screams like a firecracker aimed towards the stratosphere. 

Alternatively, “Periscope” signals a departure and sounds like its name: it momentarily sticks its head out from the depths to look around. The 48 second track acts as a brief respite, or a moment of air, before the EP dives back into the rolling waves again. Bézier closes with the title track, “Undulate”, a seven minute revelation, whose lush melody brings to mind neon sunsets and the best of 80’s synthwave. What Bézier achieves in his productions is difficult to pull off: a moody universe that allows for hyper-catchy groove. Ultra danceable from start to finish, Undulate holds the body tight and doesn’t let go. Which, when we are all ready to meet again, will be welcomed on the floor.

Brett has been making waves on the international level with his productions while also becoming a staple in the local scene playing at some of the amazing parties Melbourne has to offer. Starting in 2021 Brett released a debuting track on the wonderful Psy Section , followed shortly after by a three track ep on the equally wonderful Goddezz and even more recently tracks on V/A comps by Goddezz and Nebulae Records. Through only this modest amount of releases he has managed to demonstrate his talent by defining his own unique sound, drawing inspiration from the old and new. His tracks always seem to have a deep propulsive quality while maintaining a joyful, dreamy mood throughout bringing you to those unique, encapsulating moments on the dance floor. They feature rich, dreamy synths and pads, driving but groovy lows, and flawlessly placed highs to create a truly immersive state of euphoria.

For Brett’s contribution to the series he has brought his own production sound to his mix. Expect to be taken on a journey of highs, lows and everything in between in the form of deep, dreamy and euphoric 4/4 grooves and breaks.

As we approach the end of May, and with it, Movement Festival in Detroit—one of the longest-running dance music events in the world—Resident Advisor returns to a discussion about electronic music's roots.

In this month's Critics' Roundtable, RA music critics Kiana Mickles and Andrew Ryce talk with producer Chloe Lula about the newest release from Detroit "techno soul" stalwart Eddie Fowlkes and a breakout album from a newer Detroit name, DJ Girl, who just released on Planet Mu. 

The trio also discuss how techno's origins in Detroit's Black communities continue to be contested. The Museum of Modern Electronic Music in Frankfurt, which opened last year (and was written about recently in The New Yorker), has overlooked the city's key role in the creation and dissemination of techno, sparking backlash from the electronic music community. Mickles and Ryce lay out the implications of the continuous omission of Detroit from techno's narrative. Why is electronic music's origins an ongoing debate, and how do we honour its progenitors as electronic music moves further away from its foundations into the mainstream?
