💿 Lost Dubs 010 – ex per i mental (2008)

This track has been sitting on the shelf for years because it never really fit in anywhere. It has no melody, just rhythm and space. At the time I was deeply inspired by the drum programming of Sixteenarmed Jack and Krinjah — producers I respected not just for their skills, but as colleagues and friends. This was my nod to them.

Originally, this wasn’t even going to be part of my Lost Dubs series. LD010 was supposed to be a remix of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, but unlicensed vocals meant it couldn’t be released. That sent me back to the vaults, and one night after a long session out, I sat with this track again. I heard something in it that I had never noticed before — something I can’t quite explain. Talking about music is like singing about architecture, but it was there.

So here it is. ex per i mental. No melody, no polish, just an exploration of drums, patterns, and negative space.

I’m mostly sharing this here because I think people in this sub will dig it. Would love to hear what you think.

Rift makes a powerful return on Dispatch Limited with the Black & Gold EP, a five-track collection that marks a fresh chapter in his sound. After stepping back from production to reset his creative direction, Rift channels a rawer approach, drawing on the influence of early 2000s drum & bass while weaving in the tense, atmospheric qualities of cinematic scores. The result is an EP that feels both stripped-back and expansive, balancing heavy pressure with eerie, suspenseful sound design.

The project is also shaped by visual art. The title track, “Black & Gold,” was the first piece written for the EP, sparked by inspiration from Bill Elis’ artwork. The visual tone of his work set the foundation not only for the track itself but also for the identity of the full release.

Across the EP, Rift explores themes of unease and intensity. From the brooding atmospheres of “Teardrops” and “Paralysed” to the rolling momentum of “Tremors” and “Sinners,” the journey culminates in the title track’s stark and cinematic presence. Each cut feels deliberately crafted, reflecting both a reverence for drum & bass history and a forward-focused creative vision.

The Black & Gold EP has already gained strong support across the scene, with Philth playing a central role in championing the tracks both in sets and during the production process. Additional support has come from Enta and Cause4Concern, underlining the impact of Rift’s return.

Utherverse - 10-19 - Neuro/Dancefloor - 4 Channels

Had the rather cool opportunity to play a virtual club, Club Rhythm courtesy of Utherverse.io. I didn't really know what the audience would be like so I tried to keep things on the lighter side while still introducing some harder edges and keeping it centered towards the dancefloor. 

It was an interesting 'challenge' as a DJ, to try and cater to a crowd that you really know nothing about. I tend to give a lot of thought to that as well as seeing what else is on the lineup.  I had neither option in this scenario.  My hope is it made some asses shake, both virtually and in real life.
