The Earth crumbled beneath the Maiden’s desperate engines, as the team scrambled to force takeoff. Flames and white-hot magma poured from the cracks of their home; escape was necessary and so were the sacrifices. The ends justify the means when you’re saving humanity, right?
 
A solid 3gs slammed into the chests of the Maiden’s operators as they opened the throttle and broke contact with the surface. The ground below shrunk slowly as the Maiden rumbled on, yet the fires and lava geysers were bright enough to light their way out of the atmosphere and into the Unknown. 
“Throttle shut, engines on standby. Beginning CLF recovery, life support systems active. This is it, boys.” Jack smiled and began to remove his gear. “I suppose we’re free to ‘move about the cabin.’”

Before he could finish speaking, the Maiden was battered to the side by a massive force. The team struggled to regain their bearings and investigate the crash. Directly in front of the portside aperture was a colossal winged beast with eyes filled with fire and hatred. The walls of the Maiden began to shift and close in on the crew as their skulls clenched and hearts tightened.
