thought to be a mock heroic tale of a church deacon, somewhere between the suburbs and the sticks

and willing

da Lips
wakes up wanting

to belong
to something

but when evening comes
he's
out
on a limb

every day's end
every blow to the head
killing him

living alone
moved him further to the right

the immigrants
then the homos and the dikes

sideboard keepsakes
from a distant relative

white chocolate
socks red and blue

and there's
the sunday best

laid out in a neat pile
one day a week

strap on a sweet smile

one of the crew







but life
feels so fragile
so uncertain and so thin

greater
men
have fallen down
gone belly up
and given in

so da Lips set
and steeled 
his mind

to
the crushing gears
the lonely years

the daily grind

raised a garden wall
eighteen foot tall
