Having channelled some of the most iconic drift music of our time through A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Stars of the Lid, 2016 has already seen Erased Tapes luminary Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie provide original scores for a number of feature films including Jalil Lespert’s ‘Iris’ and ‘The Yellow Birds’ by Alexandre Moors.

It’s on the non-fiction film ‘Salero’ however, that we see Wiltzie weave some of his finest work and deliver an expertly distilled accompaniment to director Mike Plunkett’s sprawling, uncompromising visuals. Set in Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, the narrative follows the region’s ‘Saleros’ – those who have for generations gathered salt and earned enough to somehow carve out an existence in such a barren landscape. It’s with the discovery of huge Lithium reserves – a mineral used frequently throughout the tech industry – under the scorched earth that acts as a catalyst for exploitation of the environment and its people; holding a microscope to the drastic effect industrialisation has on local culture and tradition.

Recording took place in Adam’s Belgium-based studio for the guitars, percussion and small string ensemble tracking. Hungary was chosen for the final large string orchestra recordings at Magyar Radio Studio #22 with the Budapest Art Orchestra.

Prelude is the first of a series of stand-alone singles that will be released during the first half of 2020 in collaboration with New York-based record label Sonder House. This piece marks a new beginning  on Sergio’s musical adventure —a more personal, thoughtful one— and is accompanied by a series of illustrations created by multidisciplinary designer Ryan Carl exploring topics such as interconnectedness, emptiness, and freedom through the use of simple structures and patterns. The cover art, just like the music, is a journey from beginning to middle to end, everything fading into a greater point of clarity and then fading back out again.

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of hosting a delicate, slightly melancholy, and a splendidly pure solo piano piece from a Dutch composer Mink Steekelenburg, who released a single, titled Clearing on Waterway Records as Winterdagen. It seems that he is back with another four-track EP, this time for 1631 Recordings, featuring additional collaborators, including Maarten Vos on the modular synth to add further textures to his sound. The title track, "Phase In" is a serene meditation on sound and space, gently capturing the quiet noises of the piano, allowing the melody to bathe in the warm tones of the analogue machine. Side note: if you've seen some of my personal updates on Instagram and FB, you know that I have recently plunged into the world of modular myself. A perfect time to learn it, right? The point I want to make is that this is precisely the type of sound that I am striving for in my explorations, which is why I'm happy to premiere yet another piece from Winterdagen.

'Luna' is a tribute to my grandmother, who passed away 8 years ago - 5th September 2012. To this day she is still one of the most influential and supportive individuals I have met in my life. Regardless of what I did, she always encouraged me to pursue my goals and dreams. I think (and hope) she would be proud of the person I am today. 

The last time I saw her, she couldn't even remember who I was. It was a bittersweet ending to a beautiful era, filled with many wonderful little moments. Losing her made me realize just how important every small interaction with the people we love can be. Everything can be taken away from us in seconds. 

The memory of her will live inside of me forever. 

Until we meet again.
