Sound Works - Lin Weidong

Originally a Korean poem by award-winning poet Kim Kyung-Ju, the feature is a sonic exploration inspired by and intermingled with the mysterious and imaginative text, read in both English and Korean. Metaphors of nature in nature are reinvented against the backdrop of the city — the river as an escalator, the sounds of the helicopter's propellers as a stirring 'blurred wind'. 

This feature explores 'language' — the conveying of meaning and expression of ideas. Can they be fully retold in another tongue? What is our common language?

And then one day it is no longer an event, it is another duration, compressed, insignificant, not narrated, grim, without recourse: true mourning not susceptible to any narrative dialectic.” 

“How strange: her voice which I knew so well, and which is said to be the very texture of memory ('the dear inflection...'). I no longer hear. Like a localized deafness..”

A tour into the home of an interior designer reveals more than just the decoration of a domestic space.  

David had bought a converted barn with his partner Neil where they spent most of their time cultivating a garden in the idyllic countryside.

The feature draws heavily from the metaphor of its setting and anticipation of seasons.From Stray Birds by Rabindranath Tagore: 

“The birth and death of the leaves are the rapid whirls of the eddy whose wider circles move slowly among stars.”  

“The fish in the water is silent, the animal on the earth is noisy, the bird in the air is singing, But Man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air.”

Nanzhen Yang is a multiple-disciplinary artist and DJ based in Berlin and London, and a resident at the renowned Boudica, a platform focused on the faster side of electronic music that showcases women, trans+, and nonbinary artists. Nanzhen seeks comfort in chaos, combining her love of techno music with experimental soundscapes, exploring the space between romanticism and industrial textures. From hard grooves to dark, ritualistic rhythm, she established a deep connection to the crowd through well-curated selections, she paints the picture of an artist who's deeply passionate and skilled in creating memorable sonic experiences for the dance floors. Her unique mixing approach has brought her sound to international
recognition . As not only one of the local favourites, she has expanded her music footprint in Berlin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Riga and Prague, played at the renowned venues and platforms as FOLD, Corsica studio, Kitkat, Inferno, Gegen, Hangaren and more.

MISS DREAMZCAST 028 Nanzhen Yang

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.
