Tone Poem No. 1

I composed this piece over several years(4 to be exact)-it explores my love for Romantic, Klezmer and Eastern European music. I wanted to write a piece where everyone in the orchestra had something interesting to play, while also engaging the audience and giving them something that they could hum-tap their feet to. The opening is calm, chorale-like. Bouncing between the strings and woodwinds, we are taken a dynamic journey until we reach the moderato section, loud and bombastic. At this point I really explore my love late romantic, early 20th century music. Full orchestra, themes are tossed all around. As we reach the end of this swooping section, we have a repeat of the intro, but this time, the brass take it on. Ive always loved brass choirs, especially when performed in churches. The brass acts as an Organ here, warm and comforting. This section builds and builds, making room for the strings to enter, calm before the storm. With an intense crescendo, we are brought to a grand fortissimo, tutti orchestra, in all its majesty! as we calm down we got into the “klezmer” section. This section actually sets us up for the last hooray of the piece. After the Violin, Clarinet, Trombone solos we have somewhat of a recapitulation of the moderato section which catapults us into the last section of the piece. Here is pretty much the equivalent of pulling out all the stops. The themes are bounced all over the orchestra, the dynamic is…loud! and right before the end, we have a brief moment where the orchestra is calm, reminiscent of the chorale-like nature of the beginning, arriving on a warm, final A major chord.

I'm a composer who enjoys composing for theater, film, and dance. I'm also a conductor. Songwriting is another genre I really enjoy, I'm currently in a band called The Humble Boys with my good friend Juan Cosme. I hope you enjoy all the music on my page.
