James Beardmore aka Cares is a Toronto-based musician and experimental producer from Birmingham. Influenced by his multidisciplinary background in improv and visual art as well as by his teenage experiences with punk bands in the UK, the artist resorts to audio sources such as field recordings, samples, and both hardware and software instruments for his inspired and skillful sound design that touches at the same time industrial, ambient/noise, and club-oriented music. Later this month, Cares will appear with the 10-track cassette called Nerve Day on the multi-disciplinary electronic label ZABRA, started in 2018 and based in Lisbon, and focused on the interaction between music and performative and digital art.

Cares previously appeared on labels like Collusion, & Options, and early this year on Table Scraps, while also being an active member of the global collective No Exist together with Okay Vivian, Ylang Ylang, and Così e Così. In the course of his prolific career, that brought him to cross path with diverse music communities and pivotal figures like Suzanne Ciani, Lee Ranaldo, and Rabit just to name a few, the artist has been continuously evolving and shaping his production in a multifaceted, morphing entity, both on the stage and in the studio. His latest endeavor, recorded last year in Toronto, is but the latest example of versatility and mastery of sound elements converging in fragmented, unpredictable, and emotional pieces of abstract electronics.

Reportedly inspired by the role of the human nervous system in "interpreting and creating reality", Nerve Day meddles with evocative sound textures, gnawing noise, eroded kickdrums, and bursting electrical discharges in an attempt to shape a free-form, non-conceptual representation of the relationship with one's self and external reality as well as the interactions between conscious and unconscious drives. The final outing is a mammoth audio chimera that can be as elusive and tranquil as it can be eventful and unforgiving, much close to an unfiltered stream of consciousness in the form of pressure airwaves.

Nerve Day will be published in the form of a limited-edition, 40-page art publication designed by Cares himself, together with custom-packaged cassettes mastered by Graham Galbraith-Nolan. The release is set for next Friday, March 26, and you can pre-order your copy at this link. Today, we are presenting on our channels the third track of the record, called There Weren't, and possibly the most aggressive among the others thanks to its abrupt sound explosions, distorted kicks, and detuned synth stabs that suddenly switch off and mutate in the most tender and ethereal melody. With a handful of releases out on various pioneering imprints (including longplays RISC Chip and Meme Booth via Conditional Records or the latest contribution to the groove series by Warsaw based label outlines), the producer, programmer and live-coder Mike Hodnick is one of the leading figures representing a movement of computer-centred music production, recently labeled as algorave. Since we are devoted fans for quite some time, the Platonic's are proud to present Mike Hodnick´s latest project under the prolific Kindohm alias - 'Deserted / Reclaimed'.
Sequenced live on a drum machine, the diptych stretches across four vast sonic plains, bounded by curvy dunes formed by countless TidalCycles code bits, constantly pouring over like the grains of scorching and shiny sand. Full of paradoxical rhythm twists planted into the ever-bending landscape, Deserted / Reclaimed reads as a fragmented and sometimes petrifying ride towards the chaotic percepts of the monumental surroundings, dissolving in the thermal inversion somewhere far on the horizon.

This compilation was made by beautiful humans from all around the world. It is a collection of 11 varied tracks. It is noisy, experimental, sometimes brutal, with choir, different languages, vocals, piano and drums... While the tracks are all different, they are united by the fight against domestic violence.

As you may know, this pandemic is a nightmare for women facing domestic and sexual abuse. In many situations they have been forced into lockdown with their abuser.

The money raised on Bandcamp will go to La Fédération Nationale Solidarité Femmes, a French charity helping women in distress. Please consider buying this release if you appreciate it and spread the word about the current situation.

Having recently released a collaboration between Endgame & DÆMON (London and Oakland, respectively) and a wealth of cross-continental remixes, Infinite Machine has always championed the internet as a place that can foster unlikely musical alliances online. This is more true than ever with their newest signee, Gressive, who met via Twitter. The duo, comprised of vocalist lloydfears and avant-club producer SHALT, quickly found common ground in a desire to create texturally rich music that’s full of physicality. Both could see the potency of the human voice and it’s unique ability to create organic feedback within digital compositions. The initial fruits of their collaborative project is a self-titled EP that’ll grab you by the throat.

Gressive EP vehemently announces it’s arrival with the Insufficient Funds. SHALT weaves intense bass snarls and crescendos of mallet hits in the refrain, contrasted with an arpeggiated, grime-inflected B part. lloydfears’ vocals are urgent and enraged as he delivers lyrical nods to the late Mark Fisher, (“I can feel the future falling in”). It’s not hard to read lloyd’s lyrics on a more macroeconomic level than simple denial of nightclub admission; “Insufficient funds no way are you getting in. Card just declined no way are you getting in.” SHALT’s approach to interdependent sound design is on full display here, as lloydfears’ vocals seems to directly affect the instrumental, slicing through the beat’s outro like an electric saw.

Isolation OCD follows up next, a marriage between SHALT’s creeping 100bpm beat and lloydfears’ lyrics of pandemic paranoia. Part of lloyd’s strength as a writer is his ability to keep his metaphors ambiguous whilst still full of feeling. “Wanna come around me, what’s your status?” could relate as much social media clout as it could to our shared viral histories. The twin reference to DJ Slugo's Where The Rats and HP Lovecraft's The Rats in The Walls also deserves a tip of the cap.

Slowing things down further, the beat on Sever Ties ends up sounding almost like a cyberpunk, Do Androids Dream… dancehall. More confident here than the anger and fear heard on previous lyrics, lloydfears boasts of finding a subversive existence outside of the established system; “Money is a game we’re forced to play. Can't blame me when I found some ways round it.” The EP is rounded out with Snek, the audible equivalent to sundown in an industrial city. lloyd paints a dark portrait of undefined angst and violent outbursts (“Machine put a hole in the boy like ozone, it's a cold zone”).

With Gressive EP, SHALT and lloydfears have brilliantly encapsulated the anxiety of the modern condition and our collective attempt to, as lloyd puts it, “grasp at unknowable spiritual knowledge while having 24/7 headlines fed into an Instagram feed”.
