[Premiere] Vorace - Presto Fortissimo (out on ABRI CATALOG)

“Paper Ruins” is a dramatic and melancholic debut from Sozorie, an up-and-coming producer from Minsk, Belarus. Beautiful experimental ambient and arty electronica inspired by “visionary architecture,” the kind of architecture that is not realistic and only exists on paper.

Nikolay Steshitz, the person behind Sozorie, is really enjoying creating what he calls “controlled aggression” in his sound. Indeed, even the lushest moments of “Paper Ruins” possess a certain tension, buried underneath the elusive melodies and the rubbery beats.

The album showcases a rich production palette. Some synth work here sounds “classic,” repurposing the classic IDM/electronica/downtempo canon. But then everything changes, and we get more penetrative, siren-like hyperboles that clash against glitches, kick drums, and distorted clangs shaping rhythmic passages not dissimilar to early Amnesia Scanner. Sozorie ties all of these broad influences into a knot and carefully places them inside a narrative, and it does feel like a scaled paper model of a brilliant, strange building. Steshitz comes up with a fresh vision and an excellent record equal parts a home listening trip and great material for the more adventurous DJs.

In death I am caressing you’s sounds are generated from a wide array of analog and synthetic sources in an attempt to build “hyperrealistic acoustic atmospheres and sonic gestures.

After rare apparitions on compilations, sound designer Victor Morello aka @zerocrossingpoint brings to light his very first full length release. "Iteration of the Self" gathers 8 tracks created on a 4 years interval and based on countless reworks and adjustments, mirroring a dense period of self transformation for the producer. Inspired by Ambient, Musique Concrete, Film Score, Club and Metal, Zero Crossing Point delivers a stunning piece of hybrid electronics, sometimes extreme, sometimes uplifting and cinematic.

Use and abuse of home made synthesised sounds and personal field recordings create an uncommon universe in which reverb, granular synthesis, distortion and resonators pave the way for an astonishing sense of narration. Drawing inspiration from nature observations, bizarre movies, books and video games, the Grenoble-based producer built a wonderful piece transcribing strong unsayable emotions and exploring the concept of iteration.

In late 2020, in the midst of lock downs and worldwide uncertainty, London based visual artist Weirdcore presented his first solo exhibition, ‘Orient Flux’, at SKP-S in Beijing, supported by Kennedy London. Developed and produced remotely due to travel restrictions, the exhibition spanned 7 interconnecting audio-visual installations forming a ‘train station from the future’, with music and sound design by 33EMYBW and Gooooose. Initially arriving at the ‘Stellar Lounge’, passengers traversed through the ‘Oblique’ security checks, decompress and adjust their bodies for travel in the ‘Microcosmic’ zone, and pass through the ‘Infinity Gates’ and ‘Dimensional Horizon’ to finally board the ‘Trans-Aeon Express’, an illusory bullet train, to embark on a spatio-temporal journey through time.

‘Trans-Aeon Express’ by 33EMYBW and Gooooose is a continuation of this project, with music and sound design from the exhibition, as well as new tracks inspired by and sampling elements/ambience from the various installations. Released on a limited-edition LP, as well as digitally, the album features new artwork by Weirdcore, updating and evolving the original Orient Flux emblem, with graphic design and layout by Luke Griffiths.

on the feet of a wind is a wild assemblage of carbonated synthetic music from Powell and a sister record to ‘flash across the intervals’ and ‘multiply the sides’ — two albums already released in 2020. The record is released via a folder, a new music and film platform created by Powell, Michael Amstad and Marte Eknæs that bundles up music, film, image, text and other forms of madness into folders that are shared/expanded online.

The release is accompanied by a ‘Hi-sensitive’ film directed by Amstad and Eknæs entitled ‘flares, currents’. The film contains a recombined live version of ‘rise, world unfold’, the musical series that concludes this album.

a folder is a collection of disorienting works of experimental film, ambiguous texts, and other assorted media set to the most brazenly strange and formlessly mesmerising musical structures of Powell’s career. It’s also a work of artistic assemblage — without fixed notions of time. Tarkovsky once described his filmmaking as “sculpting in time,” and a folder exists in a similar kind of “zone;” it is a project continuously added to, subtracted from, abstracted, and injected into the glut of cyberspace like a slow moving pathogen that refuses to be defined or categorised. Shunning titles in favour of oblique category markers, films like aƒ34 present a mosaic of images of biological forms and sublime landscapes set to super-synthetic, carbonated compositions. All of this signals an artist liberated from the confines of the narrow branding signifiers an electronic musician can find themselves in. While it is aware of its place in cyberspace, this project also connects to something primordial and awesome. “Xenakis talked about creating universes with sound,” says Powell, “and we are all free to create our own worlds in life, art — whatever. This is what happened to me in a way: I have been in this world for three years or something, and I don’t really want to leave. The folder is a refuge.’
