A real pleasure to have the extremely gifted @xiaolinmusic from Hongkong for our fourth SoundSculptors episode 😍 She crafted a beautiful trip through many different moods and styles, capturing our musical heart and soul. It's such an interesting story accompanied by high skill not only in the electronic but also in the instrumental parts. Ambient, Downtempo, old school gamy sound, cantonese pop music vibes and more interesting colours appear in this versatile journey. Real earcandy 🍭

More about Xiaolin ~

Xiaolin (曉霖) is a DJ, producer, vinyl collector and classically-trained musician from Hong Kong. Driven by a relentless curiosity for warm sounds, complex emotions and colourful textures, she enjoys crafting magnetic sets that draw audiences in, while her live ambient sets reveal the more contemplative side of her natural musicality as a former concert violinist.

Xiaolin spent a decade studying classical violin, jazz, world music and electronic composition at Juilliard (BM’14) and Berklee Valencia (MM ’15/’16), where she played in Batucada/jazz bands and began collecting records under her mentor, Nacho Marco. Having spent two years in London just before the pandemic, she developed an interest in UK underground culture and Detroit electro.

Inspired by sounds from the the mid 80’s-early 00’s, her love for video games, anime, nature as well as a respect for her Cantonese roots, Xiaolin’s analog synth-heavy productions range from gritty acid house and breaks with earthy percussion to tripped-out electro, bassy groovers and raw downtempo ambience that invoke deeper feelings of romantic adventure with a dreamy, theatrical touch.  

Despite her ever-evolving nature, Xiaolin’s ethereal-yet-raw sound remains a signature throughout all productions.

Xiaolin is sensitive to the dancefloor and crafts an intuitive journey unbound by genre, digging deep to discover dynamic connections.  Her energetic, acid-laden selections explore the vast in-between of house and techno, while her original live set has three formats: “Sun” for daytime settings, “Moon” for meditative settings and “Body” for nightclub settings.

Releases include two EP’s on 宀 Records, a collaborative track on Klasse Wrecks “Michaelsoft", VA contributions on 20/20 Vision (Exit Planet Earth – “Helium”), Polychrome Audio (“Diffraction EP”) and Harmony Rec (upcoming), as well as three 80’s Cantonese disco tribute EP’s on Sound Metaphors’ “Bless You” imprint (A&R by Jane Fitz).

Xiaolin's ‘HEX’ residency at 宀 (Hong Kong) has seen her invite & play alongside guests such as Polygonia, Mary Lake, Peach, Merve, Vlada, Joe Delon, Closet Yi, Jesse You, Maara etc.  She hosts a bimonthly show on Baihui Radio China and has done guest mixes on EYA, Test Pressing, The Mudd Show, The Lot Radio, NTS and Balamii amongst others.  

Recent highlights include Boiler Room (Singapore), Blitz Club (Unchained), and Panorama Bar on live set as part of Sound Metaphors’ 9-year-anniversary event (coinciding with the release of her second EP on Bless You), with upcoming sets at Wonderfruit Festival and Womb Tokyo.  She will make her Rainbow Disco Club live set debut with Kuniyuki Takahashi in April 2025.

Hi all, last weekend I had the absolute honor of performing my very first festival dj set with my piano and wow.. this was insaneeeee.

The setting felt so intimate, the energy was flowing in every direction, and the whole vibe was just beautifully on point. Thank you Hintergarten Festival for trusting me with this opportunity, and to all my friends and fans who traveled all the way to support me — it truly means the world. ❤️

This date will always have a special place in my heart.

For their debut EP on Tectonic, Beatrice M. drops four deep, dubby cuts bringing weighted bass energy together with techno sensibilities and advanced percussive manoeuvers. Elegant but powerful tracks built for sound systems and curious ears!

Midnight Swim is an ode to the “softer” club sounds, repetitive aquatic grooves that remind Beatrice of their go-to sport: swimming. No phones, just back and forth in the cold water, settling into a mechanical groove. The opening track, Oval, carries its title from the appreciation of soft edges, little distortion, minimal rhythmic pattern.

Upon hearing Pinch’s tune 136 Trek, (itself a nod to Zinc’s 138 Trek), Beatrice decided to name a tune 132 Trek, to continue the lineage of their musical heritage. The tune was already called Trek because it was made after spending some months in London, and realising “everything is a bloody trek”!! 

The EP’s title track is about warm-up music and enjoying the earlier hours of the party - a quick immersion and then time for bed, rather than banging club tracks all night long. Beatrice likes to show up early at the club, watch it fill and then leave as it packs out. Midnight Swim is a dip into a roller. 

The last tune of the EP features Sub Basics, the first artist to have a vinyl release on Beatrice’s own label, Bait, and one of their biggest musical inspirations. Sub Basics’ immersive progressive sounds fit simultaneously in the deep techno world and the dubstep world. A beautiful in-between.

Midnight Swim EP (clips)

Our next VA compilation pushes deeper into the exploratory world of Pressure Dome, presenting another collection of forward-facing cuts that straddle introspection and dancefloor energy. Across ten tracks, familiar names and new collaborators stretch the label’s sonic identity into fresh terrain equally suited for immersive listening as for club catharsis.

Opening the release, Caldera & Yushh combine again with “Bubbletrain” a minimal trip round the swamp with momentum is carried by cavernous space and effervescing textures. Breaka & Yushh follow with “Betta With U”, a fluorescent downtempo beauty that tugs on the heart. On “The Grass”, Harry Rodger & Yushh pair lush atmospheres with contradictory shades of beauty and melancholy.

Piezo & Yushh arpeggiated melodies weave through an intricately designed world. Stones Taro & Breaka continue to twist things up on “Flies In The Kitchen” as warped vocals and warm wubs ride over dancehall rythmns and swampy textures. SCG & Dubrunner’s “Building Farm” bring a heady fusion of dubwise stabs and downtempo propulsion on their second outing together. 

On “Cheeky V”, Gramcy & MLE provide one of the compilation’s most immediate club weapons. Stripped-back, precise, and primed for a wiggle. Dubrunner & Yushh link up on “Trash Panda”, a playful yet fierce construction, where skipping acid lines and lush pads meet in off-kilter harmony.

Closing out the release, Roy Mills & Yushh’s “ZzZ” drifts into dreamier territory with warm vocal chops and weightless breaks, before Forever & Human Resources bring things to an intricate, thoughtful conclusion on “What Kind Of Bird Is This” a deep weave of chords and breaks that leaves the compilation in contemplative flight

✨🤲✨ Here’s a set recording at one of the last of a festival-filled summer: @sustain-release-nyc

No set theme/mood, just a journey thru a bunch of tunes I really do love and hoped people would enjoy; but to quote my girl @livwutang, it was rooted in a love for Black music (this mix cover was taken by her during the set <3). Stitching together threads of dubstep, jazz, house, breaks, garage, hip hop, dub, etc.

At some points this kinda feels more like a beat tape with selector style mixing + no long blends. A lil fusion of tired/nervous/letting the tunes shine

Thank you @itsallhalal + the rest of the team for the opportunity to close The Gym on Fri night and for looking after me. And ofc out to the amazingly welcoming dancers inside ❤️

MK closing set @ Sustain-Release Festival [NY, Sept '25]

In 2006 Mary Anne Hobbs aired a special titled Dubstep Warz on BBCR1 assembling the early dubstep pioneers for a pivotal two and a half hour showcase that helped spark a global movement for the genre. Prior to that dubstep had been mostly confined to pirate radio and dark basement clubs. She went on to curate worldwide showcases around this sound and continues to push experimental and underground culture forward through her radio show to this day.

To say Mary Anne Hobbs is a huge inspiration to me would be an understatement. As a woman that cut her teeth in a time when men really ruled the scene she was a beacon of light that paved the way for many of us. She gave us hope we could be impactful when that idea felt impossible due to our gender. A true cultural sculptor and a level of influence I aspire to. 

Fast forward almost 20 years and there are more FLINTAs in dubstep than ever. It is inspiring to see a new generation carrying the flag with their own fresh take on the sound and I tried to include as many of them as possible in here. When I was asked to contribute, all I could think of was the soothing tone of Mary Anne’s voice, which became my anchor for the palette of this mix. And of course there was no way I was going to do anything other than dubstep to honor her.
