When we first started the label, we did so with a bullish focus on all things South West. Basically if you didn’t live in Devon, Dorset, Cornwall or Somerset your name wasn’t down and you weren’t coming in. It didn’t last too long (the opening riff of Ride the Waves was enough to extend our gaze) but we like to think we’ve maintained a position as champions of the South West. 

The sad reality exists that if you live in this part of the world you don’t get quite the same opportunities or encouragement that you might do if you were in London or Brighton. That brings us on nicely to Dog - a three piece from a Devon town I hold very close to my heart - Totnes. As well as being home to what is probably my favourite record shop (Drift incase you were wondering) it also has a thriving community of people passionate about art, music, sustainability and lots of other things that make for a happy and fulfilling life. 

With this in mind we’re not sure how Dog have made such a melancholic pop song (which we’re totally in love with by the way). Jovial organ plays against Sean Harper’s insistence that “misery plateaus” with Malkmus’esque licks dropping in and out before the song builds to an irresistible crescendo. If Dog were based in Brighton, the Woff would be at the front of their shows shouting the words, they’d be inundated with gig offers and would have London’s liggers hot on their tail. Thankfully being in Totnes should allow space to grow as a band and we’re very excited to see where they go next (they’ve only just left school!).
