The B-side showcases the more uplifting ‘light and airy’ side of Zobol’s melody enriched productions intertwined with Toke’s fully charged open/close/sunrise/sunset masterpiece.

A ton of hardware, software, technical expertise and musical flare combined with hours of practice have been funneled into this next blend of which I thoroughly hope you enjoy. I hope it helps bring joy and love into the much needed dance floors of our post-pandemic society.

This week's episode of our podcast features Aidan Somers, the genius behind the electronic project Alias 1. Aidan began his journey with an interest in DJing, but quickly pivoted his focus towards music production, a passion he has nurtured for over a decade.

He draws inspiration from the works of Four Tet, Bonobo, Aphex Twin, and live acts from Mr.G & Leo Pol. According to Aidan, perseverance is a key attribute for success in the world of DJing and music production. He enjoys creating music inspired by his current mood or experiences, and doesn't often listen to electronic music outside of a club setting. Instead, he appreciates the genre in its purest form, and produces his own music whenever he feels inspired.

Aidan also keeps a keen ear on the progress of local artists like Owen Jay, Mato, Human Safari, and Sean Rickett. For him, sharing his music and forming meaningful connections with his audience is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.

Following 2019’s ‘New Atlantis’ LP under his experimental techno alias @Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann’s ‘Monophonie’ is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia.

The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation – alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. ‘Monophonie’ recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music.

Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to paired-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch’s custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia’s sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness.

‘Monophonie’ was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany’s premier neue musik collectives Ensemble @Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz’s original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.

Involved within the realm of electronic music from a young age, Sam (Scibi) is continuously inspired by the sounds of Detroit. A fascination in synthesizers and analogue practices fuels his musical development and encourages him to break the boundaries of genre and explore the true essence of electronic music.

Scibi has played for several event labels across Malta and is a resident DJ at GrooveBox, hosting prominent names in the house scene at the club.

Aidan Somers, born in 1997, is a diverse artist and producer from Malta. His work showcases a variety of influences which broadly range from ambient to emotive, as well as melancholic and electronic music. He first started studying music production in 2012 which then led to several courses on Ableton Live and eventually private tuition with Andrej Ljatkovski, who helped him to develop his sound.

Fueled by his passion for music, he further continued his studies by learning classical piano and percussion. With a focus on versatility and a love for composition, Aidan Somers aims to create a large portfolio of work suitable for a variety of settings. Nowadays, Aidan is working as a full- time producer and teacher. His days are mostly devoted to composing for local & international artists whilst also working with and developing up and coming artists and producers. 

Aidan is also one of the founders of AISO Academy, an institution focused on educating artists with a passion in audio and music.
Aidan's artistic endeavors on both known and unknown projects are also worth mentioning. Whether it's composing as 'Aidan Somers' or 'Alias 1' his electronic project, both have gained traction in the local and international scene, releasing on several record labels and working with established local artists.
