Many people may be familiar with the 1977 version of this song by Ram Jam.  But it's origins go back much further in time.  "Black Betty" is a traditional African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author.  But, the song was first recorded by U.S. musicologists John and Alan Lomax in 1933, performed a cappella by the convict James Baker (also known as Iron Head) and a group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas - a prison.  As Lomax states 'Black Betty' is not a woman, but rather "she is the whip that was and is used in some Southern prisons."  The song probably goes back even further into the 19th century and was sung by black workers and slaves.  This is our version based on the oldest documented lyrics.
