When Aim’s Cold Water Music dropped in 1999 on cult Manchester label Grand Central Records, it was an underground sensation. Preceded by a string of well received 12”s and EP’s the album was eagerly anticipated and Aim delivered in a big way, elevating his trademark sound to new heights with a collection of uplifting cinematic soundscapes, dark jazz fuelled breaks and hard hitting hip-hop beats (featuring guest rap legends QNC, AG and YZ). Uniquely, there was a sense of nostalgic sentimentality running through the record and the whole thing was underpinned by a musicality often missing in sample based production.

Pushed on by organic, word-of-mouth promotion and the success of the Aim Live band that sold out Shepherds Bush Empire and smashed Glastonbury’s Jazz World stage in 2007, Cold Water Music went on to shift over 100,000 units and is now seen as a ground-breaking, genre defining UK classic that has inspired legions of bedroom beat-makers.

The original vinyl pressing sold out within weeks of it’s release making it a sought after collectors piece with rocketing Ebay prices for clean copies. After years of fan requests, both ATIC and Aim felt the time was right to finally repress the wax. Says Andy Turner (Aim), “Rather than just repress the original album, we remastered and recut it from scratch using the original DAT master tapes.”

Every now and then an album comes along that both resonates and endures. An album that stays with those first to hear it and one that is discovered and treasured by generations to follow. Seventeen years on from it’s initial release Cold Water Music sounds as fresh, as inventive and as necessary as it ever did.

Backwoodz Studioz is proud to announce the upcoming release of Henry Canyons' first full-length LP exclusively under the Backwoodz umbrella. The Cool Side is entirely produced by Henry’s longtime collaborator, Bones, with guest features from billy woods and Homeboy Sandman. It’s a project that finds Henry putting his effortless flows to the test over Bones’ rangy production, flipping new styles with every changeup and beat switch.

“Cool Side didn’t start as an album,” Henry explains, “Bones and I started making random joints that were almost all jazz/funk samples; I’d send him sample ideas and he would send me back a beat the next day”. It was a fun thing that they talked about making into an EP, but was briefly shelved when Henry accepted an artists’ residency in Biarritz, France in the fall of 2016. 

After the residency was completed, Henry returned to the project with new perspective. “I was still in France, and in a different place mentally, physically and emotionally. Also Bones’ production had taken a darker, more pensive turn.  What came out were reactions to being abroad and isolated during a time of upheaval at home”

Bones admits that he stepped outside his own comfort zone in order to full realize Henry’s vision. “Most of my own production has more of a pop orientation. Generally, I'm into layers and harmonies and catchy hooks. But with Henry I actively tried to stray away from that,” he remembers .  

This duality frames The Cool Side both artistically, and in it’s presentation. Side A and Side B reflects not just the sides of the vinyl, but the tensions between past and present, between the ideal and the real.  While you may recognize Henry from his stellar features on albums by Backwoodz fixtures billy woods (Today, I Wrote Nothing)  and Willie Green (Doc Savage), The Cool Side of the Pillow finds Henry Canyons in a milieux all his own.
