Voice, sound, technology and binaries: an audio essay featuring Sasha Geffen

Produced by: Aimée Theriot-Ramos, Alex Harris, Constanza Castagnet, Luca Soudant, Margaux Koch

The producers came together because of a mutual interest in sound. We were interested in how we listen and how sound is being used in its own materiality to foster experimental and border-crossing ways of making and thinking. At the end of 2020, we started a small online reading group where each one of us proposed a book they wanted to read. One of them was Sasha Geffen’s book "Glitter up the Dark", which explores the intersections of gender, pop culture, the body, and technology. We reached out to Sasha and asked if they would be interested in collaborating with us. The following audio is composed by a mix of excerpts from their book, Sasha’s own voice, songs, samples, and voices from our friends.

About Sasha Geffen:
Sasha's work has appeared in Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NPR, and others. Their writing focuses on the interplay between gender, pop culture, the body, and technology.

Ahead of her upcoming set at the sold-out Halloween Carnival of the Dead, Mina delivers an eclectic 45 minutes of UK Funky, transatlantic dance, kwaito, kuduro, afrobeat, dancehall, and club-ready edits. Including a strong selection of her own material showcasing the sounds of her releases on More Time and Enchufada. 

Catch Mina holding down the tunnel alongside fellow Boko! Boko! member Tash LC, plus Sinjin Hawke, Zora Jones and the Super Kitchen family on the 27th October. Semiosis is a bioacoustics and soundscape ecology project by Manrico Montero Calzadíaz, dedicated to document and study neotropical species and ecosystems in Mexico and Bolivia. 

Llanos de Moxos is a tropical savanna ecoregion of northern Bolivia. 

These smalll selection of recordings were made in 2016 at the Beni Savanna and are part of a bigger research project dedicated to study and document the biodiversity from the point of view of bioacoustics and soundscape ecology.

Next show we're going to go beyond standard music perception and try something charmingly chaotic - B2B straight from Amsterdam!!!
Them Fatale is intrigued by the piercing forces of deep basses and
regards sonic repetition as possessing healing qualities. They play
from gabber hardcore to 90s rave classics and high-bpm techno. And
once in a while, some tacky tunes to close the deal. 
Them Fatale comes together with doble_e in this mix to play #gabber and #reggaeton. Their collaboration stems from the love they both have for these genres and it is an exploration of what extreme, messy and noisy things can happen when you put them together.

As we try to navigate the unknown, we recognise the familiar signs of known violences laid bare by the responses to COVID-19. In his poem, Mathieu Charles responds to these known -isms that keep tormenting him, us, the ones before us: racism, sexism, capitalism.
