“Of course touring and playing live is a bit of pressure, and I’m anxious and scared that something could fail. But I’m more scared that I would have to do something now because I need the money. And I’m lucky that I’ve never come into this situation yet.”

Even though I’m curious, I’m not searching for it because if you start comparing the big tunes to what you’re working on yourself, it can be disappointing. “There’s a technical side of DJing but you also need to be a music collector. You need to spend a lot of time going through music, and I think I just prefer to spend my time with gear and synthesizers and all that. Sometimes I think DJing would be more fun, not playing your own stuff… But it hasn’t really been a choice for me.”

For this month's episode of our podcast series, we are thrilled to invite Berlin based talent Iron Curtis to serve you one hour of finest grooves. 

On the continent of electronic music, Johannes Paluka has travelled far and wide, collapsing musical boundaries with enviable ease. Under the moniker of Iron Curtis, the Berlin-based creates his complex, hauntingly beautiful productions from a range of eclectic styles and influences. Be it House, Acid or soulful Techno – his sound moves in the equilibrium of reduced, but never minimal. Flashes of kitsch brighten the dark universe of Iron Curtis, but fail to interfere with the melancholy subtext. As far as leftfield electronic music is concerned and as long as he sees a chance to break a few genre rules here or there, Iron Curtis is brimming with ideas.

Making his debut in 2008 with an EP on Hamburg’s beloved Mirau, he made even more good impressions that year with a contribution to the Deetron’s Fuse. Apart from releasing House on labels like Office, Retreat or Smallville, Paluka runs the project Achterbahn D'Amour with his longtime friend Jool aka Edit Piafra. Here, they focus on Acid-infused techno, electrifying audiences with their shows and releases on L.A.-based Acid Test imprint. His latest project is called Moon – a collaboration with Johannes Albert from Frank Music, where the two friends exhibit their love for classic Electro and stripped down Techno.

But wherever his musical interests take him, Iron Curtis will always be adding a little soul in his compositions. This is the magic thread that runs through all of his productions and it is what Iron Curtis transfers from his releases to his live gigs as well. As a DJ, he is as inspired and versatile as he is a producer, skilfully taking the dancefloor into the deep and diverse corners of modern dance music.

This month, I’m joined by German producer and live performer Rajko Müller, also known as Isolée. A veteran in electronic music, Rajko has always done things differently. Although perhaps best known for his 90s hit beau mot plage, Rajko’s career has steadily chugged along, with albums like rest and we are monster earning him enduring critical acclaim and a laudatory name amongst his industry peers. Eschewing DJing for live performance and putting out only a few albums in total over the course of his career, Rajko’s path is perhaps untraditional, avoiding the spotlight in favour of the simple pursuit of tenacious, truthful music making. 

In this conversation, Rajko and I discuss his unique trajectory and life outside the music scene, its impact on his creativity, and, in the midst of it all, how his latest effort, Resort Island, has come to life.
