"Nairobi’s electronic music scene is quite eclectic, featuring diverse styles of music creating personal narratives by the artists, musicians and producers. This curation features a glimpse of the different styles of music coming out of Nairobi's electronic music scene.

From the sampled based productions of MR.LU* who has been reintroducing old Kenyan traditional folklores and narratives in his electronic production; Barno, who blends ambient with elegant piano sounds; Coco Em’s experimental improvised work and Nabalayo’s ‘Changanya’ style: a modernized folk music form that is built on the aesthetics of local folk music in Kenya; to Charles Nyiha’s film-like compositions and M³ live jazz synth improvisations.

The scene is quite diverse in styles and ‘Place: Nairobi’ is only scratches of the surface of what’s happening here. The curation focuses on burgeoning artists exploring different sonic auralities in music production" - KMRU

Currently studying sonic arts in Berlin, Joseph Kamaru aka KMRU is a Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist whose work is grounded on the discourse of field recording, noise, and improvisation. His work posits expanded listening cultures of sonic thoughts and sound practices, a proposition to consider and reflect on auditory cultures beyond the norms, an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions and installations.

His last three albums, 2020's "Peel", "Opaquer" and "Jar" received high praise from Resident Advisor, DJ Mag, NPR, and Bandcamp, KMRU is part of SHAPE platform roaster of artists for 2021. His works have been presented in NyegeNyege Festival (UG), CTM Festival (DE), GAMMA (RU), and Mutek Montreal and Barcelona among others.

Ahmed El Ghazoly aka ZULI, is a musician, producer, and sound artist from Cairo, Egypt.

Internationally, ZULI is best known for his releases on Lee Gamble’s UIQ – which included a string of EPs as well as his debut LP Terminal, an album that highlighted the depth in his productions, as he simultaneously combines experimentations in rap/hip-hop with music for listening as well as the dancefloor. The Italian Haunter Records also saw the release of the infamous Trigger Finger EP which went on to be remixed by the likes of TSVI, AYA, Acre and more.

ZULI’s music garners support all over the board ranging from the likes of Aphex Twin and Autechre, to Ben UFO and Bradley Zero, even Richie Hawtin through its wide ranging sound.

He joined the NTS Radio roster in 2016 with a monthly show that includes a dedicated hour to guest appearances from up and coming DJs and ones he meets touring around the world.

Air Texture proudly announces its latest artist-curated compilation, "Hardwired," assembled by Berlin-based musician JakoJako. This expansive collection celebrates the implicit connection between hardware-focused electronic producers, featuring contributions from Rødhåd, Acid Pauli, The Field, Neon Chambers, and many more.

"Hardwired" draws its conceptual foundation from synthesizer terminology. As JakoJako explains: "A hardwired synth has connections already soldered into the machine—it comes with certain functions without needing to patch cables externally. As a hardware producer, I feel whenever I meet someone who creates music as I do, we have this immediate connection, like a hardwired synthesizer. There's no need for small talk—we can speak about gear."

This metaphor of pre-established connections forms the emotional core of the compilation, celebrating the community of hardware enthusiasts who share an intuitive understanding and appreciation for machine-based music creation.

JakoJako has established herself as one of electronic music's most intriguing voices, exploring the territory between technical precision and emotional expression. Her artistic approach balances rigorous knowledge with unrestrained intuition, creating works that reach beyond genre boundaries.

A Berghain resident with performances at Dekmantel and Fusion, to the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican, JakoJako has released music on prestigious labels including Tresor, Mute, and Leisure System, and crafted remixes for artists like New Order and Martin Gore. Her deep relationship with analog and modular synthesis, including her ongoing connection to Berlin's SchneidersLaden, informs her distinctive sound.

Following her recent Mute album "Têt 41," this curation for Air Texture provides further insight into the musical universe that has shaped JakoJako's artistic vision.

"Hardwired" showcases 23 tracks for its digital release, with a select 9 tracks pressed to vinyl. The collection spans the spectrum of contemporary electronic music while maintaining cohesive focus on hardware-driven production approaches.

Highlights include collaborative works between JakoJako and fellow producers Mareena and Frank Wiedemann, alongside contributions from established artists like Rødhåd, Acid Pauli, and The Field, plus emerging talents representing the hardware renaissance in electronic music.

Founded by James Parker Healy, Air Texture emerged from New York City's late '90s rave scene, carrying forward the fundamental PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) ethos with a collaborative and curatorial focus. The label has evolved from its roots in Manhattan's club era and Brooklyn's warehouse scene to embrace a global perspective, working with producers across diverse styles and regions worldwide.

"For this edition of the Air Texture series, Place, I wanted to shine a light on Ireland’s thriving electronic music community - a scene that’s close to my heart. Each artist featured here is someone I’ve crossed paths with through Out of Space events, my radio show, or simply by being immersed in this small but vibrant community.

Rather than defining a specific theme or genre, I invited each contributor to submit music that felt true to where they were creatively. The result is a diverse yet cohesive snapshot of the electronic soundscape across Ireland -  featuring voices from beyond the capital, reaching into all corners of the country.

What emerged is a compilation full of character and contrast: ambient textures sit beside rhythmic explorations, experimental approaches meet emotional resonance. Despite the variety, there’s an energy that binds it all - a reflection of the trust and creative freedom each artist brought to the project.

It’s been a joy to bring this together and an honour to showcase such a talented group of musicians."

Efa O’Neill is a DJ, producer, and curator based in Dublin, known for championing Irish electronic music through Out of Space - a radio show and event series spotlighting both emerging and established artists.

As one half of The Outside, she explores sound through field recordings, analog gear, and collaborative processes. Beyond the club, Efa crafts rich sonic environments - from sound-driven radio dramas to documentary-style podcasts - bringing stories to life with cinematic depth for national broadcasters and independent projects.

Her work bridges communities and disciplines, powered by a deep commitment to local scenes and the art of sonic storytelling.
