Occlumency (Latin occultare = to hide and mens = thought, spirit) is the magical art of shielding the thoughts and feelings from others. 
Those who master this art can keep their true attitudes and feelings secret even from those who try to see through and influence them. As with repelling the Imperius Curse, this requires a lot of willpower: Only your own will can prevent the other from seeing your feelings, your sad, happy or hurtful experiences. Occlumency is easily breached when a would-be Occlumentor cannot fully concentrate on keeping the thoughts and feelings secret. He is more vulnerable when angry or distracted by other strong emotions. When he's tired, his opponent has an easy time because there's little resistance to his advance. In order to protect one's mind from foreign intruders while one is asleep, no active Occlumency can be practiced. It is therefore helpful to always consciously clear your head before going to sleep.
