“The John Frum Cargo Cult is found on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu - a small country in the Pacific. The name derives from the man they worship - a (potentially fictional) character who many now believe was a WWII soldier called John who simply told locals he was "John from America" but they misinterpreted it as his name being "John Frum". 

A cargo cult is a group of people found mainly in the Pacific Islands that religiously follow non religious figures - there's another cult that worshiped Prince Philip - with the belief that the people they worship will one day bring a cargo ship full of luxury items to their small island and make everyone wealthy.

The John Frum Cargo Cult meet up every Friday evening and spend 12 hours straight singing songs about John Frum and how one day he'll return to Tanna and bring with him wealth for the islanders.

In the 1990s there were over 5,000 members of the "John Frum Cargo Cult" but these days there are just 500 left. On this Friday in May, I met about 100 of them and their music was pure magic - every word made the hair on the back on my next stand up. Learning about such unique people and traditions is what sparks my love of travel.”
