What a year! 

We met so many great artists, made a bunch of new friends and had one heck of a summer. 
Watching this community grow bigger made us want to create an appropriate picture of the things that already sprung from it and also of things to come. 

Trying to condense all the creativity that came to life during the past few months, we put together something that reflects our journey and features as many of the directions we're headed in as possible.

Andi Otto: Bangalore Whispers (Peter Power Remix)

POAN explore soundscapes using only acoustic instruments and a looper, setting up a multiple layered sound texture, to achieve dreamlike states, relaxing mind and body for the well-being of our inner vibe.

POAN is a musical duo composed by:
_ Lorenzo Mantovani_ (Lo.Renzo, Imran and Lorenzo) on guitars, sarangi, banjo, mandolin mouthorgan, ocarina and live looping
_ Giacomo Barbari_ (Daddario) on sound creation, cymbals, gong, whistles, water percussion, udu, bongo, shakers, jawharp

Following the release of her album Maleducada, Dat García brings together a group of Argentine artists specializing in mixing folklore and electronica for the first volume of remixes that ZZK Records will be releasing on October 13, giving some of the songs a parallel life. This compilation brings together remixes by six musicians and producers of select tracks from the record, which already marries styles as diverse as chacarera and trip hop. Another twist of the screw for the outstanding musical universe that Dat builds, full of Latin American rhythms in the digital melting pot. With this display of musical expression, it isn’t strange to find in these remixes a vast display of ideas taking new sound atmospheres; from ritual-psychedelic (“Canción de bañar la luna”) by Buenos Aires newcomer Pato Smink to a slow-burning 7 minute dance floor scorcher (Maleducada) by digital cumbia stalwart El Remolon, to the most frenetic and irresistible dance beats (“Anfibio”) by the Frikstailers new project Klik & Frik. A true sign that the digital folklore movement in Argentina is showing no sign of slowing down.

“Jenga” is the first track to be born out of Uji’s solo project. An enticing mixture of sounds from nature (water, frogs, animal panting) blend with a kind of secret vocabulary transcending specific languages merged with contemporary beats. The track seems to cast a spell that transports us to a pre-verbal state reminiscent of tribal cultures, ritual and a sense of being symbiotic with nature as luscious synth sounds draw us into the magnetism of darkness, balancing sophistication with simplicity.  Infectious psychedelic rhythm patterns expand and grow in nuances as we surrender to the pristine joy of dance.

Organic-Electronic remixes inspired by the sensitive and mystical spaces between land and sea.

When Atlanta-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Piper Street Sound, aka Matt Mansfield, created his intimate sonic landscape Barrier Island (2017) he drew inspiration from Georgia's Sea Islands.  The EP saw the producer's kaleidoscopic talents through the prism of Georgia's crown jewel, the beautiful but imperiled Cumberland Island. Barrier Island focused on water and nature, displaying Mansfield's signature production style; electronic timbres woven into dubby organic instrumentation and naturalistic sounds.

Now an array of like-minded producers have remixed his work, and brought their own colors to bear, taking the source material into new spaces. Featuring remixes by Kaleema, Jin Yerei, El Buho, Andres Oddone, and Santi of Santi & Tugce. Most have chosen the album's final set-piece al-lu-vi-al, an exploration into dripping rhythms and splashes of Dub-infused spring reverb. These remixes provide book-ends and centerpiece to the work, with tunes Georgic and ZikaZikaZika rounding out the set list.

Cumberland Island, the inspiration for this EP series, is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the East Coast. Once owned in turns by the Spanish military, plantation-based agricultural concerns, and Gilded Age robber barons, the bulk of the island was gifted in perpetuity to the National Parks Department to remain a wild, undeveloped National Seashore in 1972. Cumberland Island is at the time of this writing in danger of being carved up and developed. Disruption of the aquatic and avian species and their food sources that season on and around Cumberland Island would have disastrous effects on a global scale.

Shika Shika is proud to present “Rwandance” the third album by German multi-instrumentalist @andiotto. Anyone that has had the opportunity to see Andi’s live performance knows about his talent as cellist and was no doubt blown away by his self-made device, the “Fello” - a sensor-extended cello bow.

“Rwandance” sees And move into new territory - born out of a meeting between And and Rwandan musician and dancer Evariste Karinganire, while collaborating for the music of dance piece Planet Kigali.

“The idea was to first listen to a music archive of songs and instrumental recordings of instruments from Rwanda. Then I tried to transform this material into my own sound. I was mesmerised from the very first moment when I heard this beautiful language: Kinyarwanda alongside these instruments like the Umuduri a percussive bow instrument, and rhythmical structures, like the 5/4 and 3/4 feelings which are the basis of many songs.”

Andi has a talent for using technology in a way that is touching and touchable, enticing out warm and organic tones from his machines. On “Rwandance” this sensibility enters into a perfect dialog and harmony with the traditional Rwandan rhythms. His break away from the traditional 4/4 structures of electronic music is not only refreshing but full of groove.

"Planet Kigali“ was premiered at Kampnagel in Hamburg at the end of 2018:

"Planet Kigali“ is about a bunch of time-travellers who come back from the future to our present year. They remember that there had still been borders and passports in 2019, a fine, utopian plot… and they represent a hypothesis of what aspects of Rwanda’s cultural tradition could look and sound like in 200 years. The time-warp makes it possible to shift the focus away from the topic of the country’s horrible genocide. Instead of investigating a post-traumatic society, the piece tries to jump ahead to the future and to the past simultaneously. Between old memories or recordings and our dreams, fears or expectations of the future.”
