Groovbag - Faces (LTF Remix)

This sees the long awaited return of Parker to his spiritual home at Jalapeno. And he hasn’t come empty handed as he brings a brand new 3 track EP – Aqua Dust.

Breakbeat heads will of course be familiar with the Bristolian DJ/Producer due to support from Radio 1, 1Xtra, Kiss, 6Music and XFM and his releases on discerning breaks labels Goodgroove and Bombstrikes. Jalapeno fans remember him as one half of label favourites The Beekeepers with his compadre Boca45. Since he was last Beekeeping he’s been keeping busy with his hot new Neuropol project releasing on Shogun Audio and Cosmic Bridge before coming home to Jalapeno with a clutch of fresh Parker beats.

Aqua Dust is a piece of instrumental hip hop reminiscent of the glory days of RJD2. Horn hits and vocal snaps adorn the heavy hitting beat as it drives through luscious strings samples and dream like bars. Channelling elements of Bristol’s dusty trip hop scene it’s one for the diggers and hip hoppers who like their beats underground.

This time the result of musical manipulations brought listener on a drunk friday night journey in to the downtown through the multiply dance grooves of side A to the side B's deep meditation on a universe structures and even deeper depends on the level of listeners morning hangover.

Hip hop’s influence has permeated territories far removed from its Bronx origins, spawning creative and surprising fusions that strengthen the art form’s global reach. Case in point: Anton Ivanchenko, residing in the southwestern Siberian city of Omsk, has been obsessed with funk, hip-hop, and b-boy culture since the ‘90s. Presently, he’s been channeling this obsession into his exciting project LTF (Light The Fuse). Aided by deft skills on turntables, acoustic bass, and digital sampler LTF has produced a handful of sublime 7” singles. Now he’s turned to The Content Label to reveal his debut full-length album, Jazz Echo. 

Jazz Echo simmers with the bebop attitude of its namesake, brimming with heavy bass riffs, crucial breakbeats, truncated vinyl exclamations, and an adept ear for melody. The ‘echo’ could be the time travel partaken with the album’s disparate sound sources. With fastidious regional crate-digging, LTF discovered many obscurities for his samples and constructions. “You search for the records and listen to them all day,” LTF explains. “And then you find yourself not listening to the music, but you’re listening to the musicians separated from one another. The more you listen, the more greedy you become for the sound that was born to be found and reimagined. That’s the trip. And this trip flows through the jazz records of Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe.” 

Among Jazz Echo’s many highlights is “Ritual,” showcasing LTF’s contrabass prowess and an arrangement that confidently sits beside the ‘70s jazz-funk classics. There’s “Spacebop,” combining a vintage sound with modern production techniques and the flutterings of a dusty Soviet-era synthesizer. A cosmic interpretation of the ‘quiet storm,’ played over some serious beats, manifests in “Meteo,” while “Release Your Reflection” fills every available sonic space with orchestral flourishes, heavy drums, and a helping of space echo and mind-expanding effects. 

LTF’s Jazz Echo is released on The Content Label on vinyl and digital formats. Original artwork and design are by Lautaro Pesano and the project is executive produced by Dday One.

Out 8th July on limited edition, hand-numbered and signed double 10” vinyl, the “Archipelago Remixes EP” by Hidden Orchestra is a real treat, with reworks from King Britt, DC Breaks, Kelpe and Long Arm providing a fresh spin on tracks from 2012’s hugely acclaimed ‘Archipelago’ album. Highly intricate and beat-heavy, the Hidden Orchestra originals are an adventure playground for any remixer, and the results from this eclectic array of talent are stunning and intriguing in equal measure. 

The DC Breaks Remix of “Vorka” sees the pair of Andy C protégés twisting the ethereal beauty of this track, which originally came out as the second single. Possibly the only drum ‘n’ bass track to feature a hook played on a musical saw? On the flip, King Britt’s Remix of “Vorka” finds the revered DJ and globetrotting musical multi-tasker turning the same original into a slow-burning house cut, with added vocal hooks.

The second 10” opens with Fourth Wall (Kelpe Remix). Slowing the tempo and upping the oddball factor, London based producer Kelpe, whose fans include Huw Stephens (BBC R1) and Tom Ravenscroft (6Music), strips back bandleader Joe Acheson’s dramatically layered composition and rebuilds it with the highly original rhythmic style that has established him as a heavyweight talent. “Reminder” is reworked into a high definition ambient soundscape by Long Arm (Project Mooncircle) whose jazz-influenced style has had major props from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson.

Since its release in late 2012, the ‘Archipelago’ LP has gained heavy press support including Q, Clash, The Independent, BBC Music, The Scotsman, The Line of Best Fit and Wax Poetics. This mesmerising music has also hooked daytime and specialist radio tastemakers alike, with play from Stuart Maconie, Lauren Laverne, Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews, Nemone and Huey Morgan on BBC 6Music; as well as Ally McCrae (BBC R1 Introducing), John Kennedy (XFM), Goldierocks (Selector), Late Junction (BBC R3) and Jamie Cullum (BBC R2).
