Holy Smokes, we've just gone and done it! Claude Young on the Warehouse Manifesto mix series...

Detroit Techno Legend and my favourite techno DJ of all time providing the sounds for this month. My first experience of witnessing the greatness of Claude Young was back in the late nineties in Dublin where he made quite a few appearances and won over crowds with the greatest of ease. A true showman who brought the fun and funk to techno despite maintaining the raw edgy toughness of techno at the time. 

It's fair to say that Claude Young is an idol of mine and is one of the biggest influences on my DJing style. For me, copying what Claude Young did was the way to go! 

His flair for creating rhythms and bringing funk into his techno sets is unparalleled and his unique style is a show to behold. Anyone lucky enough to witness the two copy action (chopping and cutting)and crossfading with his mouth without ever missing a beat will understand what I'm rattling on about!

I almost forget that Claude Young is also a very accomplished producer. I was too busy in awe of his DJing skills to notice anything else!

Episode 12 features a mix from one of the founding members of Pangea - Klaws. Klaws’ sound, a.k.a ‘liquid funk,’ is a combination of deep techno, minimal grooves, a dash of house, and a good measure of dub, all wrapped together in a floor-filler funky mixture, always keeping it deep, spacey, and with a driving groove. He first got exposed to the sounds of electronic music in his native country Romania. Since then, the passion for driving, and cutting-edge music only became stronger. Klaws has helped develop the techno scene in the upstate for 15 years now and continues to deliver interesting mixes and stellar events.

Celebrating the release of “Aspra,” a masterful sonic journey across ambient drone and experimental left-field sounds, Mithra, a US-based vinyl label, has forged a path that transcends conventional music boundaries. This project, a collaborative effort uniting 14 well-known artists from the underground music community, delves into a speculative mythology set in a distant, interspecies future. The physical embodiment of this endeavor—a cassette tape—is symbolically interred at the peak of Monte Aspra in Italy’s remote Sibillini mountain range, transforming these diverse sounds into an auditory letter from humanity to a multi-species world.

Mithra, known for its pursuit of groundbreaking musical gems from the past and future, reached out to these artists, challenging them to step beyond the confines of dance music. Sharing the speculative story and intention behind the tape, Mithra encouraged the artists to tap into their inner sun worshipper. The result is a tape with two contrasting sides: Side A immerses listeners in an ambient drone journey, while Side B takes a more experimental left-field approach, exploring the moods of dark and light, tension and release. This duality offers a visceral journey into a Mithraic mindset.

The artists involved in “Aspra” are deeply intertwined and respected within various scenes around the world, including New York, Atlanta, Miami, Berlin, Barcelona, Venice, and Puerto Rico. Their diverse backgrounds contribute to the rich tapestry of sounds and styles, reflecting the constancy of the sun—a symbol central to Mithra. This curated concept stands as a testament to the label’s dedication to providing a platform for artists to express themselves in ways that transcend traditional genre boundaries.

The accompanying codex, included with the cassette, invites listeners to explore the myth set in a post-human future, where Earth is re-inhabited by new species adapting to an ever-transforming climate. This setting, amidst the ruins of the old world, is ripe with fertile ground for new ideas, captured in the theme of a ‘Nature Comeback Apocalypse’ blended with ‘Urban Explorations.’ It portrays an apocalyptic future where nature reclaims urban landscapes, oscillating between desolate cityscapes and thriving natural environments.

“Aspra” is more than a collection of tracks; it’s a meticulously crafted mosaic of sound, inviting listeners to envision a world where nature and civilization converge and diverge in an ongoing dance. This release marks a defining moment for Mithra, the artists involved, and the global listening community, boldly venturing into new musical frontiers.

The DifferentSound Podcast #274 welcomes DJ Hyperactive! Chicago born and bred DJ/Producer Joseph Manumaleuna aka DJ Hyperactive needs little introduce to those versed in the history of techno.  As one of Daft Punk’s “Teachers” and “brother of the humble” according to Resident Adviser, his contributions to the underground continue to span generations.  Honing his skills in the highly influential scene and sound of Chicago in the early 90s, DJ Hyperactive gained instant international recognition and has since gone on to play the most legendary and lauded events and venues over the last 20 years, such as Orbit/ Leeds, Liquid Room/ Tokyo, Love Parade/ Berlin, Shelter & Smart Bar/ Chicago, Interface/ Los Angeles, Movement/ Detroit, Basement & Output/ Brooklyn, Tresor & Berghain/ Berlin and the list doesn’t stop there.  Also, over the course of his career, he has produced over 100 remixes and original tracks, including classics such as ‘Venus’ & ‘Wide Open’/ Missile, ‘25HRs’/ Droid, “Music Box”/ 4Trk, “Reptilian Tank” & “Chicago”/Contact, Drop Bass, Communique, Hybrid, Truncate, Figure, Plus 8, CLR, Blank Code, Impact Mechanics, Illegal Alien, to name a few. An Atlanta native, Christo pulls his inspirations from growing up going to big room raves and gay clubs in the late 90’s and early 00’s, with his love of trance, queer sexual freedom, 90’s production sensibilities, and long form rhythmic builds.  His open format sound will push and pull you to euphoric highs, unrelenting percussive tunnels, and left-field sonic infusions that feel worldly and environmental. Christo has been actively designing for musicians and Dj’s for over 15 years and has been behind some small but mighty events such as Connector, Techno Breakfast, etc. Currently Christo is working on opening a venue in Chattanooga, Tennessee to offer a place for the sound to sit dead center in the Southeastern United States.

I found this mixtape on a concession stand at a rave in LA in the mid nineties it was the first heard of him and I was really into this sound and buying lots of records related, it was the peak of nineties techno and I was also always hunting for tapes like this to study and better myself as a DJ. Over the following years I had quite a few conversations with Mike from his days at Record Time in search of the rare gems that I was having a hard time finding in LA. Years later Mike came to Los Angeles for the NAMM show and I put together a party and had him play, he stayed at my place I hadn't released any records yet and he kindly gave me production tips and shared some old stories about his days in Detroit sitting in my living room till the late hours of the morning. I am doing for him as I would like for anyone to do for me when i'm gone and share something positive to remember someone by.

I know many know Mike for his house music, I knew Mike as a Techno Dj from Detroit. Here i share a very rare Techno mix from Mike Huckaby I had this on repeat that summer, Enjoy !
