«Cuando les llegan malos tiempos a los pigmeos del bosque de Ituri, en África Central, creen que su infortunio se debe a que el bosque benévolo, que comúnmente les provee de todas sus necesidades, se ha dormido accidentalmente. Y, llegados a este punto, los líderes de la tribu extraen los cuernos sagrados enterrados bajo el suelo y soplan durante días y noches, intentando despertar al bosque y restaurar así los buenos tiempos.
La manera en que la música se usa en el bosque de Ituri es paradigmática de su función en todas partes. Los cuernos pueden no haber despertado a los árboles, pero su sonido familiar debe haber convencido a los pigmeos de que la ayuda estaba en camino y así serán capaces de enfrentarse al futuro con confianza.   
La música, que es información auditiva organizada, ayuda a organizar la mente que la escucha y, por lo tanto, reduce la entropía psíquica o el desorden que experimentamos cuando la información aleatoria interfiere con las metas. Escuchar música nos aleja del aburrimiento y de la inquietud y, cuando la tomamos en serio, puede inducir experiencias de flujo»
