Rings Around Saturn - Lansky's Vision

If there ever was a monicker apt for describing an artist’s behavior, that is Ghost Lemurs. Manifesting spottily in compilations and limited edition tapes, then returning to the shadows without much fanfare, the project has indeed demonstrated a ghostly behavior and a nature as puzzling as the animal it takes its name from. Wombs And Alien Spirits represents now their most public outing, one in which the duo of visual artist / producer Kareem Lofty and Daniele Guerrini (better known as Heith and as Haunter’s co-founder) are happy to showcase all the discoveries in a process of musical and spiritual research begun in 2019.
Described by the artists themselves as an experiment in mediterranean psi-trance, the album makes use of an incredibly diverse number of traditions, sonic sources and techniques of musical experimentation, keeping its psychedelic intentions central to the whole creative endeavor. Moments of meditative relaxation are brought to unsettling new levels by cavernous basses and spaced out drones, while tight polyrhythms bring beautiful granular melodies to a sidereal ceremonial dance.
As beautiful and captivating as it is, Wombs And Alien Spirits remains as chimeric and unrestrained as any previous effort by the two artists. It’s a type of folk music devoid of a specific homeland, but resulting from the authors’ heritages, simultaneously divided and united by the mediterranean sea, injected with all the trajectories of their personal journeys. It ends up sounding profoundly human and uncannily inhuman, tapping into the undiscovered alien element at the beginning of the experience of life.

Onto the information about how I did it:

First off, the word hash is a reference to the method I used to create the synth sounds. Hash = minced meat. I basically "minced" a lot of different formanty sounds and stuck them together(it's more complicated than this). It's also a play on the 'acid' genre which has similar sounds, but I'm using a very different technique to elicit similar sounds associated with acid, so i've decided to call it 'hash'. I'm clearing this up because I keep getting messages about people talking about their recent fun with 'hash' but i've had enough of that :)

I got to use a modular setup for the first time. Spent many hours on the thing and came back with tons of samples some of which I've microedited and such later in my DAW. I'd say about 70-80% of the sounds are sampled from the synth.

Reason I did this was to separate making sounds and sequencing them as it's easy to get bogged down continuing to make sounds.

 Toward the end I used his disklavier :)) I wrote the midi for a vst initially, but then used it on a real piano, sampled it, then edited it afterward. For some reason on his old one you get a stringy kinda sound that appealed to me when you arppegiate.

Avant le Rivage takes us back to the poetics of a liminal space in its original definition : a place of transition, of change ; a place that contains the source of a reverie. At the heart of Mélodie Blaison's music, the shore is not seen as an elementary boundary between water and land. Rather, it is a crossroads of prolific inter-relations, a breeding ground for heterogeneous temporalities that invite disembodied contemplation.

In this way, the sound materials used by the composer are intertwined to construct a series of impressions rather than a path. Her work is characterised by a long-term practice of breathing through the use of flutes. From Pluie + Pluie onwards, the listener becomes familiar with these diffuse breaths that fade into the distance. At once misty curtains and traces of imaginary worlds in the making, Mélodie Blaison's flute lines give her music a spectral body.

In addition, the artist works by playing with echoes. The percussion bounces and transposes, the synths speed up and slow down, the field recordings metamorphose. As if each component contained the seed of a communication that never stops searching itself. The last track, which gives the album its title, resonates with these multiple trajectories, so many intimate immensities that it's up to us to approach.

Mélodie Blaison is a French artist currently based in Brussels. Her work is a space for experimentation, combining modular sculptures, immersive installations and sound objects. She is interested in the hybrid spaces that fiction can generate, while questioning our relationship with the world through creative processes rooted in care, ecofeminist theories and the poetic mapping of speculative worlds. Avant le Rivage is her second album, following on from VINTVRI, released on Grande Rousse Disques in 2022.

The midnight hour crept unto thee with hasty caution, revealing 'A Little Night Music: Aural Apparitions from the Geographic North', our third putrid prowl into Halloween-inspired sounds to torment and tantalize throughout the season. For this bout of distinguished dementia, we culled 31 brand new tracks of haunted hysteria conjured by some of the most alluring ambientists and outer auteurs from around the world. 

Spanning over two hours across two cassettes, 'A Little Night Music…’ unfurls itself in a literary horror structure, appearing and disappearing through a stirring Prologue and Epilogue by London-based cellist Oliver Coates, with each side of the cassettes introducing its Chapter with a chilling dirge courtesy of the inscrutable Geographic North House Band.  

What fills the ensuing pages is a mirthful tale concocted by an assembly exploring a realm all at once mournful and fatalist at its core. Entries from Clarice Jensen, Malibu, and the collaboration of Like a Villain and Christina Vantzou bring about endless glacial landscapes accented by pitch-grey skies. Conversely, transmissions from Michael Valentine West, M. Sage, Gregg Kowalsky, and Austrian ambient stalwart Fennesz explore richly textured mines of foreboding glee. 

Suspicion is the word when considering Zelienople’s eerie horse-carriage clip-clop, Nick Malkin’s neon-lit noir-jazz, or Carmen Villain’s gripping dub excursion. Elsewhere Ki Oni, Takagi Masakatsu, and Mary Lattimore (joined here by Paul Sukeena) provide glimmers of warmth amidst a tortured chill. 

Notable is the resurrection of Lotus Plaza and his solemnly hopeful piano composition, while barren hallucinations courtesy of Alex Zhang Hungtai, Ilyas Ahmed, and Danny Paul Grody set the stage for a third act confrontation from Atlantans Fit of Body and Algiers, providing a one-two serving of sensual unrest and cautionary homily.  

With hope and resolve shimmering through the final moments of our journey, know that all proceeds from the digital and cassette editions go directly toward Feminist Women's Health Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit providing safe, accessible, and compassionate abortion and gynecological care to all those who need it without judgement.
