I think this piece only has a "description" of steady tempos. Always on the brink of a steady temp but never there. An artist's portrayal of a steady tempo. I like that about your interpretation.

Henning Mankells Kriminalromane, allein in seinem Heimatland über 3,5 Millionen Mal verkauft, wurden bislang in über 30 Sprachen übersetzt, sogar ins Japanische. Die Berühmtheit des Skandinaviers basiert auf der Figur des charismatischen Ermittlers Kurt Wallander. Entsprechend erfolgreich war die 13-teilige Verfilmung der Wallander-Krimis mit Krister Henriksson in der Titelrolle, die seit 2006 im Ersten ausgestrahlt wurden. Nun hat der für seine Shakespeare-Darstellungen berühmte Kenneth Branagh sich an eine Neuinterpretation der Kultfigur gewagt. Das ist ein Gipfeltreffen der besonderen Art, denn der Gegensatz zwischen dem Energiebündel Branagh und dem notorisch übermüdeten Wallander, der sich mit viel Kaffee über den Tag rettet, könnte kaum größer sein. Als Meister der minimalen Gesten spielt der in Belfast geborene Wahlengländer den schwedischen Kommissar mit britischer Zurückhaltung. Dank einer präzise getimten Spannungsdramaturgie sind die neuen Wallander-Adaptionen ein Highlight für Krimifans.

London-based singer-songwriter Douglas Dare releases new EP, following on from his debut album Whelm. Named after album track Caroline and new track If I Knew I Were Alive, it also features remixes by fellow label mate Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles and Houndstooth’s own electronic producer Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow.

Caroline has always been a precious track for Douglas, one of the first tracks he recorded and a story in which he imagines his grandfather is writing to a loved one during the war. As the only song on his debut album that is stripped down to just his voice and piano playing, and it being a favourite amongst fans at his concerts, it was a natural choice as a first single.

The new track If I Knew I Were Alive Douglas wrote by creating beats, looping them and recording parts live. Dancing around to the beats in his room, he started singing melodies and coming up with ideas that he wouldn’t usually have, sitting at the piano. The idea that we can do a lot more if only we appreciated our own ability and opportunity encouraged Douglas to not take the track to anyone else to re-record it, but to work with what he had created himself.

“The recording has this demo quality, which I really enjoy. I love how revealing a demo can be. It seems to expose the fundamental ideas the songwriter had and the basic quality of the recording is very revealing. One of my favourite records is PJ Harvey’s ‘4 Track Demos’, where the songs are so stripped back that you can appreciate the finest details.” – Douglas Dare

Ryan Lee West, who crafted the Rival Consoles remix of album track Swim explains, “the track existed in a minimal state for a while, and I kept thinking something was missing. There's always something missing! And then out of casual chance, I was sorting through my portable recorder files, and I came across a recording of an installation that I did, which included four motors hitting glockenspiel or xylophone notes at random. I chopped it up in a few seconds and it worked perfectly. It adds texture and movement to the remix. But what's important about these sounds is that they are not in time. I think this remix creates sense of space, subtlety and physicality.”

"The original is so well put together, and the vocal so unique that it was a hard one to approach. I set out to reflect the beauty of the vocal in the intro, so that I could build it into something darker later on. This also mirrors the meaning of the vocal. The last sections are meant to evoke feelings of being washed away by a torrent” – Ross Tones about his Throwing Snow remix of Nile.

The cover photograph was taken by Douglas Dare himself; printed on silver card, so that the seawater shimmers against the light.

Douglas Dare and Rival Consoles will both perform a special in-store show at Rough Trade, presenting their respective EP releases, before embarking on an Erased Tapes U.S. West Coast tour and Douglas accompanying Fink throughout 13 countries in North America and Europe from September to November as their special guest.

Falling Through The Clouds

This Song without Words strikes me as almost overflowing with melodies. They come in various shapes, but produce an attractive forward momentum and a positive mood, the minor tonality notwithstanding. The middle section provides contrast of key and melodic shape, but maintains the character. Only in the coda, where the opening tune returns at half speed, does the music offer a sense of poignancy and heartache.

The pet project of Texas based programmer John Mark Lapham, - of ‘The Earlies’ and 4AD band ‘The Late Cord’ fame - Old Fire joins a world-class roster that includes the likes of Steven Wilson, The Pineapple Thief, Anathema, Nordic Giants and The Anchoress.

Taking nearly a decade to make, 'Songs from the Haunted South' has been a labour of love for Lapham.

Born from an album concept for a 4AD project with singer Micah P. Hinson (The Late Cord), the album was originally intended to feature different singers and musicians recording songs that were both covers and originals. After parting ways with Micah, Lapham remained determined to realize his vision for the album and sought voices he considered special or fitted the inspiration.

The first piece of the puzzle fell in to place after meeting the former owner of 4AD, Ivo Watts Russell, who introduced Lapham to singer/songwriter, Tom Rapp - who recorded a string of haunting albums in the late 60s and 70s under the name Pearls Before Swine. The vocals Rapp provided formed the basis of the track Shadows. In the following years, guest vocals were recorded by Sara Lowes (The Earlies), DM Stith, Christopher Barnes (Gem Club), Rebekka Karijord, and Alex Maas (Black Angels). 

The project also features a myriad of exceptional musicians  including DM Stith - piano and guitar, Christopher Barnes (Gem Club) - Piano, Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive) - Guitar, Thor Harris (Swans) - Drums, Christian Madden - Rhodes piano & Organ and Semay Wu -Cello.

The 13 track album contains a selection of songs that in one way or another are dedications to people, some dead and some still living. Musically, inspirations range from ambient artists such as Brian Eno and Stars of the Lid to Psychedelic Rock, traditional Country and early 4AD.  

Sitting alongside the original Old Fire compositions are a selection of intriguing cover versions. Lapham uniquely interprets songs by Psychic TV (The Orchids),  Low (Laser Beam), Ian William Craig (A Sight Grip, A Gentle Hold), Jason Molina (It’s Easier Now), Camberwell Now (Know How) and Shearwater (Helix).

'Songs from The Haunted South' was produced by John Mark Lapham, mixed by JM Lapham and Mark Kuykendall, and was mastered by Ian Hawgood.

The powerful cover art was designed by UK’s Grammy Award winning designer Vaughan Oliver, famed for his work with artists such as Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pixies, Throwing Muses, in addition to artists such as David Sylvian and Bush.

The cover shot taken in 1958 features Lapham’s father during bivouac camping basic training in the foothills of the Ozarks, at Fort Chaffee.
