Psychedelic cumbia, also known as chicha, is a fusion of genres that originated when surf rock and psychedelic rock from the US reached Peru in the 1960s. Musical pioneers around the Peruvian Amazon combined the percussion, rhythms and melodies from Colombian cumbia, Cuban guaracha, and indigenous music, with the lively electric guitar and keyboard coming from the north. The result is easy-going, unpretentious and fun music with very catchy guitar licks that invites you to bop your head and dance.

Today, a new generation of South American artists are pushing this sound forward, adding electronic elements to create very compelling, danceable, trippy downtempo to stomp your feet to.

In their 6 years of existence, Akalé Wubé have never stopped widening the canvas onto which they lay their music, which keeps becoming richer and deeper just like the their primary source of inspiration: the popular Ethiopian repertoire of the 60s and 70s. The band started off covering music from the “Ethiopiques” series, after which they immersed themselves deeper into Ethiopian music, all the while multiplying their collaborations with musicians and dancers from Ethiopia, Africa and Europe. Slowly but surely, clocking in at around 200 concerts in Europe, Asia and Africa, the band has become one of the world’s leading ambassadors of Ethiopian groove.
