Tender Buttons Guest Mix for Adam Oko on NTS (July 2021)

This mix originally aired in November 2022 on @soundecology1 radio c/o @fobbyjindal. Below you'll find a text I wrote about its composition:

"Years ago, I went to a lecture at York University by the filmmaker and scholar Mike Hoolboom. He gave this razor sharp talk on the idea of the first cut- the first cut into a project- the first gesture towards an idea. For him, no matter how dislocated a project got from its root causation- it would always at its heart, hold that root through to the very end. The first cut is always the deepest.

For this mix– I was interested in this idea of the First Cut in the face of imminent ecological collapse. How the first cut in our Planetary Crisis predates my body and is therefore unknowable to my body. And yet, it is from the place of embodiment that I meet our changing world.

On that note, it’s been an unseasonably warm November here in Toronto and my body’s feeling haunted. So for this episode, I’ve put together a mix of sonic hauntings. Bone shaking music– that pulses, throbs and rattles the body. Music from the depths of the heart that charts worlds real and imagined. I don’t have any answers, but I hope you’ll see this mix as a sort of research methodology into the act of listening. Listening as a way seeing or clairvoyance- as a way of considering what our world sounds like and perhaps what it is that we’re mourning. I named this mix after a pamphlet I recently found: From Electrical Fire Spirits May Be Kindled."

Akash Bansal is a writer, filmmaker, DJ, and programmer currently based out of Toronto. Their expanded poetry practice includes video, sound, performance, photography, as well as more traditional forms of text-based poetics. Their recent work has examined borders – both real and imagined, between people and places, and especially those within ourselves.

I know a lot of people who love music and love it so intensely, but I don't know many who embody it the way Savannah does. For her, it seems to be both an extension of her deepest feelings and expression of pure abstraction. Listening to records with her can feel like an endless opening up, and it's a true joy-- like eating sun-ripened peach on an island beach, with your closest friends abound, slowly sinking into the sand, as the cool waves melt into your body. 

So close your eyes and lay yourself down for 2 hours of ecstasy, love and sex with the maestro Savannah at the decks.

For this month, we have a very special guest selector and dear friend, Jodie, holding it together (aren't we all?) for the second hour. 

Along with her partner Saad, she runs everyone's favorite bar, The Little Jerry. God knows how many saucy nights I've had there– early into the morning, dancing, on god knows what, barely holding it together (aren't we all?), having the TIME OF MY LIFE. Each week, we'd all compete for who on staff would win the ultimate title of being Head Cockroach (a nice 4-armed race to the dump).

I can't tell you how much I love her. And it's a deep pleasure to have her in for this month's radio show. So pop something bubbly, sit back and tune the heck in.

Before ever chatting with Izaak, mutual friends told us both how much we reminded them of each other. Somewhere in lockdown, we finally connected and have been messaging constantly; about music, but also this vacuum we call life on Earth. One day, we'll meet. For now, friendship takes many forms and this mix is one of them. 

Izaak says the sound is very January, and I'd have to agree. My roommate came in while it was on and said this mix was very sad. I think it feels more like a k-hole. Either way, here's to the blues and all the feelings that come with cold weather and out of body experiences. Catch Iz for the first hour.

The last thing I really did before the pandemic started was spend 4 days in Detroit. It was exactly a year ago— Ryan, Andi, Benny and Mike invited me to come for the Salon party— and it’s a high that’s sailed me through the stormier nights this past year. 

We spent the days driving around, talking— and every night we cranked deep into the sounds— the ones we recently found, the ones that keep us going, the ones that affirm the intense pleasure of listening. I don’t remember sleeping much while I was there, although I know it must’ve happened. I do remember wondering where this magnificent energy I had came from. 

At some point, the term “Midwestern hospitality” was explained to me, which is unlike any other sweetness I’ve met on the planet. Is Michigan the centre of the universe? Maybe.

This the first in a series of lovers mixes — music by couples who DJ together (no Lovers Rock required). 

The automatic writing show is a free-form, freewheeling, cacophony of sounds; an experiment in friendship; a warm bath for the earwax. Stop, Drop, Listen. 👂
