On the occasion of the launch of his album, "Altars", which kicks off the catalog of his newly founded record label, Black Music, we invited Deon Jamar to take part in our podcast series.

Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music was the initial inspiration.

His career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase Bluecollar Gentleman.
Around the same time, working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and eventually spending years behind the scenes at Sound Signature. That work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ-Kicks compilation, "Detroit Forward", on !K7 Records, where he enlisted artists that represent the progressive sounds of today. His own track, "North End Funk", was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut.

With over a decade of experience in Detroit's music community, Deon has been seasoned by the many worlds within. Ranging from the city's hip-hop scene to the world of underground dance music, and even serving as resident DJ for De'Sean Jones' Urban Art Orchestra, all of these worlds inform the musical range in his sets.

Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/R&B, house, techno, & broken beat. His sets aim to employ elements from all these forms with culture in mind.

Aside from playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the Healin' Session party series and the art exhibit, concert, and party series, Black Music, from which the label.

Black Music was founded by Deon and Brian Oscar (Wrcklés). Inspired by the legacy of those before and the work of peers today, these events were made to honor the lineage while also demonstrating the golden cord that connects all of our music throughout genre and era.

Fusing these worlds together informs the DJ as well as the producer.

A radical objection to industry standards, leaning more into the energy and depth of sound.

Black Music, the label, will carry this same tradition.

This EP is like a walk on an unknown wild & hostile land. The tribal side is omnipresent on it with UK Funky, Hard Drums or Gqom influences.

The first track called "Jumbo" plunges us into a primitive era mixing drum riffs with weird creatures cries. "Nenuphar" and "Drum Hiss" the second & third titles are anthems to hard drums which take the usual ingredients of this ruff genre. "Quiet Corner" is a gqom hybrid track here to take us a recovery time. Then we have the club track of this EP called "Gyal inna Jungle" and  to finish "Tapion Riddim" a special drummy edit of the DBZ character melody Tapion.

Akash has been a Music Presenter since his pops taught him to use the CD changer on their home system in Metro Detroit at age three. 

He started DJing house parties in college at the University of Virginia for the Student Hip Hop Organization and WXTJ Student Radio with genre-fluid sets that prioritized energy and movement.

Since moving back to Detroit, he has spent hours in record stores and dance floors, learning from the city's rich talent, legacies, and lineages of Black Music. His biggest influences include Theo Parrish, Dez Andres, Deon Jamar, and Meftah.

He started a weekly party called Market Mela at Midnight Temple in Detroit's Eastern Market, which became a go-to place for the city to hear Desicentric music mixed into dance rhythms. 

His selection work gained the attention of the global DSP Audiomack, where he now leads curation for Punjabi and Desi Diasporic music. 

Since moving from Detroit to pursue a career in the music business, he's committed himself to refining his craft as a selector and his network as a leader in order to bring more opportunities to the communities he represents.
