Mark Angeles (poet, fiction writer, essayist; Philippines) is the author of three poetry volumes and a fiction collection, all independently published. He has anthologized progressive writers in the Philippines in zines including KaMAO (Comrade Mao/fist), translations of poems by Mao Zedong. His forthcoming books include one novel and three children’s books. His poetry, short stories and essays have appeared in magazines, journals, newspapers, and anthologies. He has conducted creative writing workshops for organizations and universities across the Philippines.

Nonilon Queano is a poet, playwright, musician and a songwriter. He enjoys playing kulintang with his cultural group Kinding Sindaw based in New York City.  He holds a PhD in Literature from the University of the Philippines Diliman and is now retired but busy with the recording of his first CD collections of original song compositions. Recently he acted on onstage as the old Senator in LEAN the Musical.  He was a fellow for plays at the International Writing Program in University of Iowa under Paul Engle.

A full time teacher, Wena is currently working on her PhD in Malikhaing Pagsulat at the University of the Philippines. She was named Makata ng Taon (Poet of the Year) by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and has also won awards in Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, Gawad Galian and Gantimpalang Ani for her fiction and poetry. She has also presented papers in national conferences on cultural studies. Her critical essays, poetry and fictions had been published in journals and anthologies, and in her book Pinakamaagang Paraan ng Pagpatay.

Paskie is, according to a fond fried, a “renaissance dude on wok.”  He is a veteran journalist-editor-publisher who survived a turbulent dictatorial regime in his home-country of the Philippines, then traveled through four continents—backpacked his way through people’s love for words, passion for community, and madness for food. He is a poet, filmmaker, teacher, artist/painter, musician, and yes—a cook.

AKDAAN is a Toronto-based literary collective dedicated to empower, enliven and engage the Filipina/o community.

AKDAAN aims to promote a culture that is nationalist, scientific and for the masses. This aim will be the impetus to creative productions in the various genres of literature and the other arts.

Within such a perspective on artistic creation, AKDAAN recognizes the value of the several languages of the Filipino people, and seeks to further enrich them. These languages will serve as the creative venue as well as a productive theme of cultural discussions which are organic to Filipino culture and are not loans from foreign cultures.

AKDAAN aims to awaken the consciousness of Filipinos to a nationalist, analytical and profoundly important portrayal of the situation and aspirations of the nation.

AKDAAN mirrors the new portrait of the Filipino: the Migrant Worker.

The literary pieces and artistic creations will root out the factors and obstacles that create a colonialized, commercialized and repressive culture. AKDAAN is involved in a nationalist movement, along with other sectors that advocate for change in society.

AKDAAN holds training sessions wherein people can hone their literary and artistic skills and talents. Workshops, discussions and study sessions will be available, to assist in the
liberation of our culture from centuries of oppression by colonialist cultures! 

As AKDAAN's contribution to the growth and proliferation of a great nationalist and mass-oriented culture, it provides such sessions as a venue for the critical evaluation of the following literary and artistic creations: creative writing pieces; original music and songs; creations in the visual arts; musical compositions using indigenous instruments; creative presentations in theatre and dance.
