This video will talk about Type i.a Supernovae.

Let's suppose that we have a white-dwarf star in a system; a binary system.

... and it gets to the place where it gets above the Chandrasekhar limit.

This type of Supernova is very consistent.

If we know the true brightness of a Type i.a. supernova...

Those that happen in a nearby galaxy where we can know the distance of *that* galaxy...

We can calibrate how bright the Type i.a. supernova are and come up with a distance to the galaxy.

Supernova have other effects besides a massive explosion, at times, due to the extreme gravitational influx, it can throw planets outside their original orbit and send them hurling through deep space without a parent star. This can also happen if a start system crosses another star system or a black hole. 

A Type i.a. supernova is known as a 'standard candle' in the cosmology community. They are incredibly consistent supernovae as they always will throw the same luminosity no matter what.  Astronomers utilize Type i.a. supernovae to calculate distance.

They only occur in binary systems in which one of the stars is a white dwarf. Once enough matter has fallen into the white dwarf, (critical mass is often referred to as the Chandrasekhar mass, or Chandrasekhar limit), it triggers a violent supernova.
