@arrow_nmw: massacre route. in the normal route, chara joins your party and helps you defeat each boss to clear the "mindgate" they each guard, as a test of the kind of person hira (frisk replacement) is. each gate leads deeper into the world, and the very last gate is the one chara is supposed to guard. so in the massacre route, after the tutorial instead of waiting around to help you out and join your party, they disappear for the entire game until the final mindgate:
