For the second episode of my new guestmix series MIDNIGHT SNACK, please welcome @tllfsn from Seattle. Favorite snack: Ice cream! Tollefson is currently making waves in Seattle and for this episode she brings us super pumping hard techno vibes. Oof, is it time for the rave yet?! 

Every month I’ll be featuring a different artist with a guestmix and some insight into a day in their life. Each mix includes a 15 minute intro mix by me and a 30 minute guest mix. This intro mix also starts off with an unreleased track of mine, release date TBA :)

Give us a peak into a day/night in your life. 
I work a regular 9-5, M-F gig during the day! After work, I'm finding tracks, working on my own, prepping tracks for upcoming gigs I may have on the weekends. I held down a residency for 3 years with Q nightclub & Studio 4/4 on Thursdays so my weekdays were a bit busier! 

Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
Trying to balance between work, DJ gigs every weekend, deadlines for mixes and finding time to work on my own music has been a huge challenge for me as of late! Both mentally and physically. 

What is something you are looking forward to? 
I'm really looking forward to finallly releasing my tunes, my trip to Europe & my move down to LA later this year! (I've lived in Washington my whole life!) 

Give us one most favorite and least favorite moment during a performance:
Going B2B with one of my good friends, Astronomar on a whim is definitely one of my favorite moments I've had while mixing! We talk every day, but never really chat about music so the fact that our sets flow really well together makes it really special. One of my least favorite moments while performing has to be whenever I've had to go B2B with someone & our vibes just aren't matching up.

Midnight Snack 002: Tollefson Guest Mix

For the sixth episode of MIDNIGHT SNACK, please welcome one of Brooklyn's most talented DJs and producers Crossbow. If you've ever seen @cross_bow play a set you already know she is an absolute killer on the decks and this mix is no different. With dark, deep and fresh techno vibes - she makes an hour pass so seamlessly, only to be repeated again. 

Midnight Snack aims to showcase outstanding talent and share a behind the scenes look into their life. The name was inspired by many artists juggling various responsibilities and working late hours just to pursue a musical (or related) passion. Every month I’ll be featuring a different artist with a guestmix and a short interview.

And so Crossbow: 
Give us a peak into a day/night in your life.
My week days are a regular 9-5, but in the evenings, I work as much as I can on production and digging for interesting music! On the weekends I DJ or go to parties to support friends/artists that I resonate with. Honestly, with all that, there's not much time for much else!

Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
This past summer was very challenging for me for a number of reasons, but I am thankful for what this time has taught me; to reflect on areas I could improve on and slow down to start building something that is more true to myself. It can be hard to develop your true sound as an artists, but you have to believe in yourself and play what makes your heart skip-it will pan out eventually!

What is something you are looking forward to? 
I am looking forward to whatever new experiences are to come. I am genuinely appreciative and happy to be able to live in the city I love and to continue learning and growing from it. I am very thankful to be able to incorporate music into my life in such a meaningful way and to be able to share this passion with others. I am excited to see where I will be able to go as an artist and what it will mean overall in the future for me. 

Give us one most favorite and least favorite moment during your musical journey thus far.
My favorite moment was learning how to program a Techno kick drum in Ableton (that shit is seriously complicated, lol). That is one of the first details I notice in a song-it's what I dance to. The other components of the song develops it's personality, but a strong kick is its bones. My least favorite moment was when I reached my first brick wall with DJing (it's a long story) but it really did teach me that even when times get extremely hard, you absolutely have to keep working for something that you love. True passion for something does not come often in life, and so you can't let setbacks stop you from aspiring towards something that makes you feel true joy.

Midnight Snack 006: Crossbow Guest Mix

For episode seven of MIDNIGHT SNACK, please welcome XOXA resident and Scottish native @panooc_music! With tunes that have aired on BBC radio 1 and an upcoming performance at Art Basel, Panooc is constantly knee-dip in gigs or producing in the studio and you are going to absolutely love this groovy deep disco mix they have prepared for us. 

And so Panooc: 
Give us a peak into a day/night in your life.
During the daytime, my schedule usually consists of various rotations of studio time (whether it be recording or producing), practice (DJing &/or saxophone), making time for exercise for my health (both physical & mental) and the usual life chores that seem to take up way too many hours in the day. By night, I’ll either be gigging, working events (both for XOXA, the collective I’m resident DJ for, and other event groups), attending gigs or doing something completely nonmusic related to give the brainwaves an inspired shake-up or rest.

Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
Creative challenges come and go, whether it be choosing the musical voyage for a gig or writing a new track. I think the biggest challenge I’ve been facing recently is how to keep up with maintaining a balanced schedule and lifestyle when nightlife is the main arena I’m working in: I’d consider myself an ambivert and I often remind myself that my passion lies within the music itself when I’m knee-deep gigging and working in the nightlife culture itself, which can be all at once overwhelming, inspiring, problematic and progressive at the best of times. When you turn into more of a night owl, it’s important to keep things in check mentally and physically for sustainability with your output (and remaining a cool human being in general).

What is something you are looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to the next years’ activities and moves: I’ll be in Miami beginning of December for Art Basel and then in the UK for beginning of 2019, spinning & playing some gigs and working on some projects with XOXA, and then back to NYC for a bit with gigs before heading to the Ontario region in Canada in the summer for a festival. And of course everything else in between...!

Give us one most favorite and least favorite moment during your musical journey thus far.
Being 30 years old now, there’s been a lot of amazing musical moments: the exciting “holy shit” moment in hearing one of my first releases being played on the Funktion One soundsystem at Cielo years ago, taking an 8-piece band on tour in Taiwan to play in a stadium over New Years, headlining at House of Yes this past summer, becoming resident for XOXA (a female DJ collective who’s mission is strong and important to me), tracks and compositions being aired on BBC Radio (1 through Scotland), moving to America from Scotland at 16 years old to study music in its many forms, gaining my MA by 22 years old... These are some moments that, looking back in hindsight, really feel like personal milestones for me. My least favorite parts of the journey have mostly been to do with the social dynamics I consistently have to face as a queer, GNC-identified individual (female-assigned-at-birth) but luckily I’ve grown a thicker skin after all these years, have support from the most solid kinds of humans I know and ain’t stopping this music thing anytime soon.

Midnight Snack 007: Panooc [XOXA] Guest Mix

For this year’s first episode of Midnight Snack we're so honored to welcome the one and only @dischetto! She has a massive label release coming soon and a history of shows with huge acts such as Boys Noize, Rezz and Brodinski as well as a previous residency at Webster Hall for their Gotham series. Can't wait to see what else this eccentric highly influential artist has in store for us. ENJOY and be sure to check out her interview below.

What inspired you for this and how would you describe it? 
In every one of my mixes I like to give people a taste of what one of my sets might sound like. I don’t like to stick to any one genre but ease from one wave to the next: I like to play a healthy mix of house, techno, electro. I'd describe it as a neurotic and potent ball of fire.

Give us a peak into a day in your life. 
I work during the day at a salon in Manhattan - working in a client-facing business where I’m on my feet all day and talking to people is actually a nice juxtaposition from sitting behind my computer working on music things. When I’m not at work, I’m most likely taking care of the feral cat colony in my backyard or chasing my own cat around the apartment. If I'm not working on music at home, I'm probably re-watching Seinfeld for the 90th time while Marie Kondo-ing the apartment with a glass of pinot noir in hand. 

Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
Deciding to indefinitely discontinue my monthly DISSOCIATE party was a very hard thing for me to do. For the year it ran, it was a pretty successful way to showcase local techno talent as well as some international names and big headliners too. I started the party so that these local DJs who usually open shows would have a platform to just play whatever the hell they wanted instead of catering to a specific audience, headliner, or venue. I put a lot of love into this party but had to realize that I needed to take a step back and think about where I wanted it to go, creatively and musically. It's not totally dead yet but laying dormant for now :)

What is something you're looking forward to? 
Releasing my next single! It's my first single that's going to be released on a label - a label that was started by one of house music's pioneers. It's a very very big deal to me! 

If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
Everyone would have off work and have to go hang out with a bunch of cats, simple as that.

Midnight Snack 009: Dischetto Guestmix

Welcome to our 10th episode of Midnight Snack!!! How exciting to be in the double digits already and thank you for your continuous support. This episode features one of Brooklyn's finest melancholic ethereal house producers Amy Jor! Ramen-loving audio engineering SAE student and fellow cat mum, @amyjor has been performing all around Brooklyn's top venues and will also be playing Elements Festival on Memorial Day weekend. Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: instant ramen or some kind of dumplings

Q: What inspired you for this and how would you describe it? (anything in terms of vibe, mood, influences) 
A: Recently i’ve been making a lot of deep, melodic house and its also mainly what i play and these are some of my new and old favorites :) a melancholic, emotional, ethereal groove

Q: Give us a peak into a day in your life. 
A: i’m in an audio engineering program at SAE Institute, so i go there in the day time and then when i get home, i chase my cat around for hours and work on my production/mixing and assistant engineer at rich royce studios :D i also work on a lot of visual art on illustrator, photoshop and adobe after effects. and i graduate soon and that made me panic so i signed up for a c++ course 2 make audio plugins. I also tinker around with arduino/teensyboard for midi controller stuff and build analog synth circuits and am going to definitely focus on that a lot more when i’m done with school. I like to go out on weekends n would like to go out more and see more of fav artists/support my friends but i dont turn 21 til august and can only go out if im playing orrrr like know some1. 20 is kind of a dumb age here in the US T.T sooon lol

Q:Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
A: hmm well one show i played, i requested a pioneer mixer bc the FX and i dont really like using a xone if i dont have any FX.and they told me OK but when i showed up it was a xone and wasnt planning on using my laptop. Le sigh. It’s happened to me a couple of times so I guess I get something out of it like it’s good to be versatile and its good practice for that. But also I would have rather have been using a pioneer mixer heh.

Q:What is something you're looking forward to? 
A: ELEMENTS LAKEWOOD OMG. this is gonna be my first festival and actual camping experience umm. Dying. So many of my favorite artists are playyying like damian lazarus and stavroz! and also uuuu Akki and my friends at Vibe Tribe <3  

Q.If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
A: hmmm! deep house + ramen day lol we’ll get a venue that has a kitchen n eat a bunch of ramen+dumplings and then also u can sit and chill and theres deep melodic house, vr games n weird interactive stuff. its possible!! mmanyone wanna collab cuz im down!! :3

Midnight Snack 010: Amy Jor Guestmix

11th episode of Midnight Snack and the vibes are just getting tastier!!! This episode features San Diego based artist Casmalia. With a number of releases on Nite Records, Hood Politics, OKNF a number of MMW shows in the coming weekend and a set at Lucidity Festival this April - you'd be silly not to keep track of this amazingly talented producer! 1. What inspired you for this mix and how would you describe it? (anything in terms of vibe, mood, influences) 
This mix is a bit deeper and more techno inspired than my usual style. It's featuring a ton of original unreleased tracks, collabs, and remixes from myself and my friends on Nite Records and Hood Politics. I'd say this is definitely a good mix for late night or anytime the vibe gets darker.

2. Give us a peak into a day in your life.
Some days I work from dawn until dusk while others are filled with friends, events and travel, there is no such thing as a typical day in my life. During the week, I'm either doing administrative work for one of the biggest non-profit music studios in Southern California, teaching Ableton lessons, or producing my own tracks. On the weekends, you can find me playing a show, surfing, snowboarding or making food with my friends.

3. Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
Recently I've upgraded my laptop, and have been attempting to backup 8+ years worth of samples and project files, as well as move all of my old VSTs over to my new laptop. Needless to say it's been an annoying, slow, painful process. I've been learning to rely on less, and to identify which elements I use frequently vs those I don't really need. It has streamlined me as a producer. 

4. What is something you're looking forward to? 
Right now, I'm very excited about playing at Lucidity Festival on April 12-14th. This was the first festival I ever attended on the west coast, and now I get to return to Santa Barbara to help curate the vibe. 

5. If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
I would have a holiday where everyone would have to wear onesies all day, it's impossible to be in a bad mood while you're wearing a onesie. Then at night, everyone would go on a massive onesie bar crawl.

Midnight Snack 011: Casmalia Guestmix

For this episode we are showcasing one of the biggest all-inclusive collectives based right here in New York, XOXA. Led by powerhouse boss Kira Ibañez, XOXA just celebrated it's 2 year anniversary and features superstar female/non-binary talent. Joining us for this feature is also talented New York mainstay and XOXA member @kandylion, bringing us a pumping disco and house mix. Check out our interview with both below:

Give us a day in your life: My typical day is packed with planning XOXA events, working at music venues and trying to relax and explore the city as much as I can. *Popcorn with Chalula on it is my favorite.

What was your inspiration for XOXA? I wanted to create a party for everyone where queer people and women felt supported and safe. I didn’t see a queer party that reflected an all-inclusive mission so I created XOXA to fill that void in NYC nightlife.

Where do you see XOXA in 5 years? We just celebrated our 2 year anniversary this past weekend-it’s been an incredible journey. My biggest accomplishments this year were producing a sold out Halloween show at House of Yes and bringing XOXA to London. My main goal this year is to keep working on expanding XOXA globally-there are so many amazing people all over the world that are a part of this movement.

What are some trends in the industry that are exciting to you? I’m not so focused on trends in the industry as much as advancement. I’m really proud of the progress women and queer people are making within the music industry as a whole. Plus all the support and acknowledgement that they are finally receiving from allies. I feel lucky to work alongside so many talented people. 

Kandylion (XOXA member) 
What was your inspiration for this mix? I drew a lot of inspiration from the disco and house sounds I’ve heard in nyc nightlife - in particular at one of my favorite parties, PAT at Union Pool. I’ve heard djs like Eli Escobar and DJ Minx there and between the music and the crowd I always enjoy the vibe curated at that party.

Give us a peek into a day in your life: I often have a lot of late nights so I enjoy a laidback morning with a big breakfast and a lot of coffee. Then I prep for the rest of the day - I’m a freelancer when I’m not djing so my schedule varies widely day to day. Sometimes I’ll be working a big event in Manhattan or assisting with a show at Pioneer Works, or maybe just petsitting. Regardless, I try to set aside some time every day to dig for new music. At least an hour of prep for every new dj gig. Later at night I’m either out at a gig or attending a party, or maybe just in bed catching up on some shows

What is some thing you're looking forward to? Pride Month and World Pride! I’m excited to be djing Brooklyn Pride with Whitney Day and QRTR at 3 Dollar Bill.

Guestmix for Seattle's Full Groove on C89.5

For episode 13 we are so excited to host one of our biggest influencers, supporters and friend from the early days - Eau Claire! Feed Me Disco founder and one of the most recognized names in the indie dance scene around the country, Eau Claire has had countless chart toppers over the years and constantly supported by the likes of Goldroom, Autograf and many more. In fact, she will be joining Goldroom at his High Seas Festival in New York City on August 24th - mark your calendars everyone and enjoy this amazing groovy disco and house mix and her interview below. 

1. What inspired you for this mix and how would you describe it? (anything in terms of vibe, mood, influences) 
I was inspired by the recent remix I did for Monogem called "Shade" and a couple shows I have coming up this summer.  One of them will be the High Seas Festival in New York City on August 24th!  I'm so excited for it and wanted to make this comeback mix extra special.  It's sprinkled with groovy disco and house vibes perfect for sailing off on a yacht. 

2. Give us a peak into a day in your life.
At this particular moment i'm on holiday which is wonderful :)  I'm all the way in Vancouver Canada spending time with my grandmother and parents.  When I'm not on holiday I work from 10a-7pm and then typically cook some dinner, maybe workout, and then either head to my studio to work on some new music for an hour or two before bed.  But since  I've been on holiday  I've had so much more time to work on music and I'm super excited for you all to hear this new mix!  

3. Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
I'm working on this new original track which I recorded my own vocals for.  I'm no Mariah which makes it 10x more challenging to finish a track because I'm never satisfied with the final product.   I can't tell you how many unfinished songs sit on my hard drive.  So I decided to try something different and while using the vocals I originally recorded I experimented with slicing a couple of the phrases to midi and created a whole new chorus with way more energy and vibrance than the original.  Remember to always keep your mind open and think outside the box if you're faced with something difficult.

4. What is something you're looking forward to? 
Releasing new original music and performing on my first yacht festival.

5. If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
Haha toughest question for last...I'd say we should name it Disco Nap Day so everyone could take midday naps - what could be better?!

Midnight Snack 013: Eau Claire [Feed Me Disco] Guestmix

For episode 14, we're so proud to present this exhilarating mix and feature from Canada-based star Kilma. Producer, resident-DJ at local hotspots, artist mentor, talent host herself and most important of all - mother of an adorable tiny human. Constantly spearheading new projects and being a part of notable events (such as the upcoming Emotion Arts and Music Festival) Kilma is really an inspirational artist to keep an eye (or better yet an ear) on. 1. What inspired you for this mix and how would you describe it? (anything in terms of vibe, mood, influences) 
I have been exploring a lot of new and old sounds as of late with my newest residency and it's re-reignited my love for various sub-genres of house and techno, from acid to ambient and vocally. 

2. Give us a peak into a day in your life.
It's a mixture of routine while going with the flow. I like to plan my days with the most important thing first while I am most focus and get creative in the evening when everyone is asleep and their are no distractions. Everything in between is dictated by my tiny human. *laughs*

3. Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
I'm always taking on new projects, learning and getting out of my comfort zone. More recently I've started a mentorship I'm incredibly excited about, which focuses on helping two artists get clear about their goals, plan setting and keeping one another accountable. It has been exhilarating, motivating and pushed me to grow a lot.

4. What is something you're looking forward to? 
Emotion Arts and Music Festival this August in St. Laurent Manitoba. Only it's second year and the owners are incredibility innovated, ambitious and driven. It has been inspiring to watch unfold. 

5. If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
"Present Day." Of course it would actually be about being present with the people around you. No responsibilities, bills or worries about feeding oneself. Just being there with the ones you love and getting to experience every moment to the fullest.

It's a mix of sounds we really love and play out a lot when we DJ. House meets tech meets acid meets trippy meets disco meets club meets sweat meets love.

Coffee, dog, pilates, breakfast, studio, dog, studio, studio, studio, dog, dinner... Netflix.

Getting off a ferris wheel during the sets of The Black Madonna & Honey Dijon.

4. What is something you're both looking forward to? 
To DJ around the world and connect with people through music.

5. If you were both queens of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day? 
Celebrate life! Get drunk! Everything is free! After that, it'd be the end of the worlds, obvs.

Autograf & WYNNE - Test The Waters (AKKI Remix)

A setlist is just not complete without a track by Yade. This Netherlands based producer/DJ has been churning out dance floor heaters for years now and is further well known for her Podcast series "The Sound of Yade." 1. What inspired you for this mix and how would you describe it? (anything in terms of vibe, mood, influences) 
I just came back from my holiday in Indonesia. I spent the last week on Bali (Canggu) and the vibe there was so laidback and easygoing. I'm still feeling that mood and I think you can hear that in my mix; vocals, drums and a certain 'good vibe' :) 

2. Give us a peak into a day in your life.
Most of the days I wake up early and the first thing that crosses my mind is BREAKFAST ;-) I just LOVE breakfast! I go to my car and have a ride to work for about 50 minutes. On the way I listen to new music and get inspired by that. Back home I eat something and then go to the gym, I also LOVE to workout ;-) During the gym session I listen to some sets of my favorite artist to get some more inspiration. The days I don't have to go to my 'moneymaking job' ;-P I'm making music and eating chocolate haha.

3. Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
My most recent challenge was making a really really difficult choice! I'm into the music business for over more than 12 years now. I've had periods I earned enough money with it, but there where also periods I didn't make enough money with music. There were a lot of ups and downs and of course frustrations but also wonderful moments. Because of some recent rough moments in my personal life and after that some beautiful moments I came to the conclusion that I needed some structure and balance for a while, so no 2 jobs and keeping a lot of plates spinning. Just some focus. After A LOT of thinking I decided to keep the music going, but a little bit on a low for the time needed. Because of that I finally was able to buy a house with my boyfriend, because I had a normal balanced salary for the first time in my life. A lot of less stress and now I am feeling GREAT! So... when and if the time is right, I'll spend my precious time more on music again. Because I still LOVE to play and produce. 

4. What is something you're looking forward to? 
I'm looking forward to find the right label for an EP of mine that I already finished like a year ago, but still didn't find the right label. I have patience ;)

5. If you were king/queen of the world and had a holiday named after you what would it be and what would be done on that day?  That's easy!! Haha, It would be called 'Feel Free And Do Your Thing Day'!!  If people wanna have parties on every corner of the street, do it! Without complaining people and everybody is just kind and nice to each other. Some sort of respecting day. Everybody can do what they like and if some else don't like it, that's ok, they can do what they want! But only with a kind and peaceful attitude <3

Midnight Snack 016: Yade Guestmix

Local New Yorkers are definitely familiar with the sounds of @mirafahrenheit but look out Detroit! This recent transplant moved to your city a few months ago and is ready to dive in deep. Check out the guestmix and interview below. On a separate note, this will be the last MS guestmix of the year with a brand new direction and launch in 2020. Thank you for all your support over the past year and a half! <3 

1. What inspired you for this mix and how would you describe it? 
Well, I just moved to Detroit, and the move was inspired by a desire to be closer to family and have more time (and space!) for the things that bring me joy. I have been getting out as much as possible to just see what's around me, and that includes local artists like Ian Fink and Dez Andres and the crews from Detroit Bureau of Sound and Portage Garage Sounds (PGS) -- all super prolific! I've been playing with some darker sounds in recent months and enjoy the grittiness of artists like Sworn Virgins and another artist I've stumbled on and fallen in love with via bandcamp named Sir Robert Orange Peel. (((heart hands))) I am also obsessed with this Swedish label, Höga Nord, which releases a combination of gritty rock and electronic sounds. Definitely check them out if you're into that kind of stuff. 

This mix is a combination of vibes I love, including the sultrier side of italo, rock, and a touch of disco/funk. I exercised some restraint by not including any Deewee tracks, but I very easily could have. I also have to say that Matias Aguayo is a rediscovered favorite and I adore every bit of the track I included here from his oldie/goodie Kompakt album, "Ay Ay Ay" (2009). I didn't include anything from Cómeme on this mix, but mostly because I have on several others.

In general, I have been coming back to a place of really admiring and appreciating the work of bands and really all kinds of artist collectives. As a painter and musician who has long fallen off my practice (piano, cello, alto sax, guitar - in that order), I am excited about revisiting that part of myself. 

2. Give us a peak into a day in your life.
My days lately have been all over the map - literally, in a sense. I'm currently typing this out from Amsterdam, where I've been checking out ADE and doing some work with DJs For Climate Action. As I mentioned, I just moved to Detroit, but I've been traveling for gigs and haven't been around all that much. I work remotely as an administrative/research assistant to an education equity consulting firm, and am in the process of applying to grad school for social work. For me, the balance of a "day job" has become important for my mental and spiritual health, as well as for a sense of financial stability. I love doing mindless work for a badass social justice-geared company and being able to reserve my creative energy for passion projects, like DJs4CA and music. 

3. Tell us about a recent challenge you had. 
Hmmmm...I'm just going to leave it at "the relentlessness of social media". Recent, ongoing, no end in sight.

4. What is something you're looking forward to? 
Opening for James Murphy this Friday. And Summer!
