Ten years on from the release of his highly acclaimed, award-winning debut LP ‘Emulation’, Mefjus shares five of the album’s biggest tracks with his label-mates at Critical for the 2024 remix treatment.

A landmark album in the genealogy of drum & bass music, the hard, heavy and supremely technical tracks gathered together for the original ’Emulation’ set a new standard in sound design and pushed the conventions of the genre to the very limit.

Mefjus himself reworks original title track ‘Emulation’, flaunting his untouchable studio skills by balancing frantic rolling drums and expertly engineered sub bass with a his trademark otherworldly sound design to unleash an almost impossibly energetic track.

Enei and Calyx take a tune each; with Enei reworking ‘Suicide Bassline’ into ultra-hard, minimal jump-up monster, while Calyx injects his signature molten, twisted bass into ‘Surrounded’ to make it all his own.

Two of Critical’s most recent recruits complete the package, with VISLA transforming ‘Saturate’ from a moody roller into a gritty stomper and Bristol-based SMG bringing ‘Change Of Mind’ featuring MC Maksim bang up to date in style.

With Depths Reimagined: Beneath the Static, I returned to the songs that shaped me — peeled back their layers like the ocean strips away the shore, exposing raw, unseen depths. Some tracks have lived in the shadows of my past for years; others have just surfaced. All of them are fragments of who I was and who I’ve become.

Midnight Skies was the very first song I ever created — a fragile spark lost beneath the waves of time. . It’s raw. It’s vulnerable.

Each track is a current pulling you deeper

Only Gain is about rising from the wreckage — reclaiming strength and knowing who you really are beneath it all.

Ride On reminds you that, at your core, you walk the hardest paths alone — no matter who’s beside you on the surface.

Grains of Sand counts every lie that slips like grains beneath the tide — endless, cutting, impossible to grasp.

Erase Me is a silent plea to be released — to be forgotten, as if I never existed at all.

Mondays is a melancholy reflection, like drifting through the quiet waves of a fragile past, where time felt infinite and brittle.

This isn’t just cinematic Drum and Bass.

It’s a journey into the depths — through pain, through memory, through the static that tries to drown us.

It’s my darkness laid bare.

"Nonplus is my attempt at creating a hybrid between minimal, tech, jump up and melodic techno. It started as a simple roller until I decided to make the main lead, a strange FM synth that drifts over the bassline, creating some sort of polytonal effect, which creates tension. This is followed by a melancholic breakdown and the second drop, which utilises variations in chords and rhythm to create variety."
