Bensley – A name which has remained a talking point across the genre since the announcement of his exclusive signing to Ram Records. Heralding from the city of Toronto, known for being a hotbed for the drum & bass genre, Bensley has stood as an anomaly.

In its 20 year plus history, never before has the RAM imprint created a journey as unique as Bensley’s. If you scour the internet, you won’t find one single release, an upload or even any previous history on the producer. Yet all it took was a one single demo to attract the attention of the acclaimed electronic music label. The RAM HQ was instantly enveloped by Bensley’s technically adept and musical personality, with the demos blowing the roof off the Hornchurch office on first listen. 

Bensley ‘let the music do the talking’… Quite literally. On first listen to ‘Fandango’, a precursor for what’s yet to come, you’ll instantly tune in to why he was snapped up so quickly. His innovative composition appeals to even the hardiest of heads – but it also builds a bridge between the commercial and the underground.

Straight away, you can hear the heavily influenced tinkling of his jazz musician grandfather; Bensley is also an accomplished saxophone player, having traveled extensively with his school band. An artist who’s just as inspired by the contemporary sounds of Wilkinson and Loadstar, as much as jazz pioneers Dave Brubeck and Charlie Parker, the depth of his musicality goes deeper than a DAW interface.

With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

Next Generation

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove their still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

Tantrum Desire – Oblivion feat. Solah

There's a storm on the horizon. For those that know what's up in the bass-heavy music scene, the forthcoming Tantrum Desire album, “Diversified”, is one of the most anticipated releases of 2015. You just need to check recent sets and radio shows from heavy-hitters like Friction, DJ Hype and Drumsound & Bassline Smith to see that cuts from the LP are already making their presence felt.

And now here's “Oblivion”, the single that shows just how monumental the Tantrum Desire sound has become.

This track encapsulates multiple sides to that sound. The intro is pure seduction, with a slick rhythm section of bass plucks, laid-back drumming and piano chords under the light and grace of Solah's vocals. As an edge of percussive hardness creeps into her voice, all of a sudden the energy builds and it's clear there's a switch-up coming. Then the drop delivers that to full capacity, cutting through the smoky atmosphere with high-energy synth hits and the type of call and response between bass and mid-range that mark this out as pure Tantrum Desire.

The breakdown gives us yet another facet, as jungle breaks float in and around the piano and vocals to offer gratitude to the old skool. Then there's a second drop to put it all together, showcasing weighty bass, euphoric high-end and a deftly technical approach to delivering the chord changes.

“Oblivion” is Tantrum Desire in concentrated form, a lethal dose of musicianship, ultra-clean production skills, respect for their D&B heritage and dancefloor hype. This is a killer which is immediately going to find its place across raves and airwaves. Check it, and hold tight because the album “Diversified” has a lot more where that came from.
