Afro Cuts

Soundway Records present a special summer tribute double a-side 12" with two tracks from African musicians that both passed away within a couple of months of each other at the end of 2013 / start of 2014. Both tracks are perfect summer tropical DJ fodder for the dancefloor.

On the first side South African singer Shaluza Max's massive Mashkandi / house anthem from 2002 gets a first release on vinyl. This track was a huge hit in South Africa and around the world on its release. With a soaring Zulu vocal and big sound it's a fitting reminder of a very talented musician who worked as a very well respected producer, composer and arranger. He died tragically young at the age of 47 in January of 2014.

On the flip we drop a fairly unknown track from the mid 1980s from one of the biggest names in African music, Tabu Ley Rochereau. A kind of almost balearic proto-house congolese pop cut with drum machines and trademark sweet congo horn section, Hafi Deo is a beautiful track that fell into obscurity outside The Congo by perhaps being too smooth for the 'world music' crowd in the mid 80s. Tabu Ley passed away in November 2013 in his late 70s with over 250 albums and 3000 songs to his name. A true pioneer of the congolese soukous sound, he was also one of the most influential African musicians of his generation.

Let's have a trip in the samba country with this funky track from "Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds". it's a compilation that brings together nine of the most important and obscure hits of the Brazilian Funk-Boogie-Disco scene during the years of 1978 to 1982. RNT co-head JKriv does it up royal here with a bit of old and a bit of new. On the A side “The Queen On Her Throne” is one of J’s seminal reworks in all of its 8 min glory, and although names have been changed to protect the innocent, a bomb by any other name is still a bomb! On the flip, a lesser known West African 70’s jam by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band is worked up into a raucous jazzy afro-house stomper in “Bukom Mashie (JKriv Edit)” Plus there’s a the stripped down beats-n-synth-apella  of “Queen’s Beats,” perfect for mixing with the OG or played on it’s own!

Today’s premiere comes by way of London producer G. Markus . Known for his releases on Roots For Bloom and Monologues Records, he has crafted a groovy house sound complete with vocal samples and funky bass lines. This year G. Markus has put out a string of so-called « G-Edits, » including a brilliant edit, of an old disco groover G. Markus picked up at Montreal's very own Disques Beatnik on a trip to the city last year, repurposing the syncopated rhythms for the dancefloor. The producer is back with the third installment in the series, with two tracks that follow suit in soulful grooviness.

The A-side track, ‘Ichiban,’ is an eight minute disco burner with a driving kick and shuffling hi-hats. Bright keys offer a simple chord progression and occasional melodic motifs, leaving space for the complex bass line to take centre stage. A subtle high pass filter anticipates the first vocal sample - “You’re my… play it for me” - which gives way to beautiful sax solo. Around three minutes in the vocal sample returns, this time completing the phrase “You’re my number one DJ,” from which the original song takes its name (‘#1 Dee Jay’ is a single from Goody Goody’s 1978 self-titled LP, and only album). G. Markus treats the song with great care, maintaining the effective dance elements like the bass line and percussion while supplementing the rhythms with melodic samples. The result is a modern disco edit that is free of some of the cheesier aspects of the original.

The flip side contains ‘Power,’ a similarly funky edit that features vocal and guitar samples, while a bassier kick creates a heavier vibe.

'Born Ready' is made of a perfect synthetic melody which John alone has the secret, a powerful bassline, a bouncing drumrack and lovely vocal samples. As B side's first track of Untartined Tapes Volume 3, it sounds fantastically fresh with no concessions. John can surely keep the keys of the label.
