Oats in the Water is a logical follow-up to Esmeralda. At the heart of it, the song is about introspection and realizing your flaws and mistakes. In the first verse, Ben is offered help while dealing with a loss or a break-up. Nonetheless, he declines this help and states that he has to “find my own way down”. It is up to him to recover from the loss (“as I should”).

In the second verse he is encouraging himself in this healing process (“Hold your gaze”). He then invokes the parable of King Midas, who could change everything he touched into gold, and claims “There’s coke in the Midas touch”. Coke is a carbon-rich fuel, which is probably used to indicate that the Midas touch is impure. This refers to his life now she’s gone. Everything that once brought him joy (“Midas touch”) is tainted by his loss (“coke”). “A joke in the way that we rust” could mean that aging leaves its scars. And this realization allows him to “breathe again”.

(It can also be interpreted differently. As we age – “in the way that we rust” – we discover all kinds of flaws in ourselves. The “joke” is that even King Midas, who seemed to have everything, still had his struggles).

In the third verse Ben elaborates on the things he will find in the healing process. He must face his deepest demons when analyzing or contemplating the loss (“you’ll find loss and you’ll fear what you found, when the weather comes tearing down”). This all hints at the introspection that is needed in order to heal.

The chorus is about this process as well. It describes that the healing process will be far from comfortable. The phrases “oats in the water” and “birds on the ground” imply that some things are not correct. 


There's coke in the Midas touch

 The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, visits the Sea Witch who lives in a dangerous part of the ocean. The witch willingly helps her by selling her a potion that gives her legs in exchange for her tongue and beautiful voice, as the Little Mermaid has the most enchanting voice in the world. The witch warns the Little Mermaid that once she becomes a human, she will never be able to return to the sea. Consuming the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed through her body, yet when she recovers, she will have two human legs and will be able to dance like no human has ever danced before. However, she will constantly feel as if she is walking on sharp knives and bleed constantly. In addition, she will obtain a soul only if she wins the love of the prince and marries him, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries someone else, the Little Mermaid will die with a broken heart and dissolve into sea foam upon the waves
