This is my grandfather, Phil J. Hill circa 1920 during his years on the road playing in prohibition's speak-easies and orchestra pits at silent movies.  His son, my uncle, Ben is writing US(anyone interested in first-hand, experiential history from a 91 year old) his memoirs. I have my grandfather's short version of his. His favorite gigs were; 1- Playing for John Phillips Sousa. 2- playing in top Marine Corps drum/bugle bands as requested to serve in BOTH WW1 and WW2.
He was personal long-time friends with WF Ludwig Sr. and I have a book from Mr. Ludwig sent from him in his handwriting as a gift in 1954 he found and had reprinted that John Phillips Sousa had written. Much history.
As for me, my career in radio was long and enjoyable. During that time I was blessed to play for a time 6 nights and a day each week with my ex-wife lead singing an excellent group of musicians(except me. I was best at managing and booking and always accredited with being a "headhunter" of fine talent in radio, live music, and was most known in the insurance industry for finding talent, writing manuals and training from them, being on a speaking circuit in management and my own corp. of around 200 agents headquartered in Tulsa with satellite location in Oklahoma City until crime and resulting stressful illness forced 12 years of retirement. Now I am healing, against all odds due to finding out God really does exist and Does heal. Playing drums again with several false starts largely due to 3 bouts of blood-type disease, multi-diagnosed illnesses of depressive and other CNS systemic loss of autonomic processes preventing homeostasis, I FINALLY re-started a final official process in Nov. of 2014 focused on humility, fundamentals, musicianship centered on pocket and meat/potatoes, no gravy PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERSONAL CEILINGS SHATTER focus. 20 minute, no fill remedial beats at 40 beats per minute followed by the same basic beats at 60, 65,70,80,90,100,110,120,130,150,170 and 175 followed by similar bpm work in blues, gospel/fusion, etc. styles for 3 months followed by teaching from 5 or 6 on-line teachers of LINEAR drumming, counting and charts, and then combining linear phrasing with meat/potatoes using primarily 16th note and triplet combinations, linear style have just begun to be used live again. The difference is amazing. This process has opened many new doors and slammed, nailed, and disposed of many others. Comparing conceptually a long-drive, great putt golfer who couldn't get under 100 scores seems to best describe past paradigms. Discovery of humility as strength, paradox, less is truly more, this process is able to be possible regardless of age or other disability. The reason this is my described profile is the discovery that drumming is not just metaphorical to life...they run in unison just like the homeostasis of necessity to abundant living must be discovered IF there is to be the consistency of becoming the type of musician the above picture was. 
Finally, pictures adding to the above, along with the memoirs of Ben Hill covering His career beginning with public exhibitions at age 11 and his view of his father's career will be linked as this process continues.
