This is Track # 17 off my older solo acoustic CD called 'The Gift' that I made a limited amount of and gave away as a gift to family, friends and fans one year for the holiday's. It was free then so I'm giving it away free now, hence the word Gift. It was very low-fi and recorded all on an original fostex 4 track tape recorder in my attic with live instruments, raw stripped down songs, no vocal tuning, or many effects besides natural reverb. I wrote all the tunes and just played them live for the most part. For this stuff, it was about emotion and not perfection. I just started to get into singing as well so in general, I pretty much left any mistakes that weren't too horrible so it has it's own character. Hope you enjoy it!

Broken Man

Mark Englert participated in many legends before trying to create his own. He's been a 
member of Dramarama since '82.He covered the New York Dolls before it was cool, jammed with Sky Saxon in the 80's, and has worked with members of Blondie and Tom Petty's famous Heartbreakers. His solo work owes alot to his KROQ history but bodes well for a more interesting future-though a history of hits is probably a hard one to shake.Welcome to the Good Life is a strange pick for my taste, but I've had a good time listening to it in a Berlin Cafe wishing I was driving through the American West. "Disasters" features beautifully jangly guitars that emind me of Tom Petty's best work, and "I Fell IN Love" starts as a Neil Young tear-jerker,then morphs into a space jame starring some face-melting solos that wail a bit too much for me. With it's dirrrrrty guitars and grindy bass, "October Part Two" is a song I would love to make up lyrics for a while moshing at a frat house foam party. Despite its perfect production and conventional material, there is something really special about Englert's music-a subtle sadness here, a nuanced celebration there... My favorite song on the record, "A Van Nuys Merry Christmas," combines underwater sitar guitar lines and nostalgic holiday xplophone melodies into something so strange it could only be described by its title. Moments like that make me want to keep listening to this musician's development. I think he'll surprise us all someday, hopefully soon! 

The Good Life

This is a rough demo recording. The song is about an older homeless man that I met in Penn Station in NYC. We started talking while I waited for my train. I decided to put everything he said to me into a song. I hope that this song will call attention to the homeless people that we walk by everyday without taking notice. Shelters are overcrowded and there is a lack of low income housing. There needs to be more government assistance  to get these people back on their feet and to provide a place for them to sleep at night. Anyone can end up homeless for a number of reasons and I think it is important that we try to advocate for them, especially the elderly and mentally ill.
