커버 아트는 뮤지션의 음악을 전달하는 초대장이자 또 다른 예술의 재해석이다. 음악의 시각화라 볼 수 있는 이 작업은 그것 만으로도 예술성을 평가받아 마땅하나, 상업성이 강조되는 시장의 영향에 따라 음악이 사장되면 덩달아 빛을 잃는 안타까운 영역이기도 하다.

우리는 한국의 음악 시장이 가장 자유롭고 다양했으며 전환기였던 시절부터 지금에 이르기까지 많은 뮤지션을 나열해보았다. 역사, 장르, 지역의 다양성을 두고 기록에 의미가 있거나 혹은 아주 개인적인 이유로 여섯 뮤지션을 골랐고 이들을 만났다. 그리고 동시에 여섯 명의 작가가 이들의 앨범을 듣고 커버 아트를 작업했다.

우리는 앨범의 커버 아트를 살피며 음악을 가늠하는 그 순간부터 이미 음악은 재생된 것이라 여겼고, 뮤지션과 음악 그리고 커버아트를 기록하고 재해석하는 본 전시에서만큼은 눈으로 경험하는 음악에 주목하고자 한다.

본 전시는 저작권의 인정조차 불분명한 커버 아트가 예술 작품으로 인지되고, 음악의 시각화에 있어 보다 다양한 시도가 나오길 바람이며. 첫 번째 기록을 남긴 여섯 뮤지션의 음악이 커버 아트를 매개로 다시 되새겨지는 시간일 것이다.

Topological Taboo (soundobject edition II)

The disused signaltower in Erkner, a building through which signals and switch settings were once fed into the railway network via electromechanically controlled cables, is wedged between the long-distance tracks towards Frankfurt (Oder) and the Erkner S-Bahn station. A simple clock (electronically synchronized with the "master clock" of the entire railway system) and a shoebox-sized computer on the wall are the only elements still functioning. The large cable control panel that once dominated the room has been dismantled. Old office furniture: a chair, a desk, a filing cabinet; old dishes, a Bundesliga poster, empty wooden lockers in the adjacent room. Outside the window, wild overgrowth, chirping crickets. In the basement, winter service equipment: shovels, pitchforks, grit, and obsolete metal signals.

The fact that this decommissioned, no longer needed structure of the signal box has remained in this location indicates an inner tension within the mechanical technology of the railway that is still perceptible. From the measurements of space by the railroad, which facilitated the conquest of the American Midwest from Chicago, a double image radiates: one, the utopian humanization, the integration of remote regions, the mobilization of agriculture, the development of classless travel comfort, and, on the other hand, the incision into the landscape, forced civilization, standardization, and speculative accelerations (of a mobilized market of goods). Railroad facilities cut through cities and landscapes like technical currents. When one steps into the interior of the vehicle, they move at a fantastic speed through places that from the outside represent a topological taboo: "Do not enter the track area." The sign with the crossed-out stick figure is indicative. Like the danger of a raging river, the electrical current laid around the tracks and the threat of the immense, difficult-to-stop mass of the trains create a danger that turns the space occupied by the railway into both inaccessible and purely transitory. Similar to the riverbank, humans are relegated to the edge of this artificial shore. The platform edge or the boat-like vehicle of the train. There is no swimming in the tracks. Turned parallel and octagonal against the natural currents, "Hans the Fisher from Arckenow" finds himself pushed to the edge of this artificial shore.

Ernst Bloch shares a legend about the invention of the first locomotive, which careens out of control and explodes in front of some bystanders (a nearby pastor is driven mad by the previously unseen horror). The essence of this anecdote is the decision to force the steam engine onto a rigid track. Yet, it is precisely this network of rails that forms the basis for a purely technical territory. The world divides itself through the installation of a safety structure into accessible and inaccessible worlds. (One unit involves the emergence of the Trans-Siberian and American railways with the beginning of adventure travels, expeditions. Climbing mountains, reaching where no human has been seems like a dialectical response to this decoupling of a space designated only for technology.) The reality of mechanization divides the living space into the normal operational field, where facilities are used in a controlled, intended manner, and the underlying infrastructural technical foundations on which the usage occurs: out of the taboo created by the latter arises the phantasmagoric necessity of escape, linking the utopian potential of modernity forever closely with its experience of exclusion, danger, terror, and the resulting need for security and predictability.

Gaza is already among the world’s most densely populated areas and the UN has long described conditions there as “unliveable”. Egypt has so far rejected proposals to allow civilians safe passage into the Sinai and urged Palestinians to stay put. But if more than 2 million people should find themselves crammed into Gazan’s southern half, as Israel continues to bombard them, the pressure on Egypt to open Rafah crossing might become irresistible. A trickle of refugees could easily become a flood.

Prominent Israeli officials and commentators have anticipated exactly this scenario. Senior lawmaker Gideon Sa’ar, now part of the ruling coalition and a leading figure in Israel’s most popular party, declares that “Gaza must be smaller by the end of the war”. Giora Eiland, former head of Israel’s National Security Council, proposes that Gazans be instructed to “leave for Egypt or gather on the seashore” while Israel renders the territory “temporarily, or permanently, impossible to live in”. Former Israeli Ambassador to the US Danny Ayalon argues that “Gazans have large areas in the Sinai into which they can evacuate” and where the international community can “set up tent cities for them”. Energy Minister Israel Katz instructs “[a]ll the civilian population” in Gaza “to leave immediately”.

Influential commentator Arel Segal fantasises that, in a “moral world”, Israel would “exile all of Gaza to the Sinai”. Right-wing broadcaster Shimon Riklin enthuses that “we are getting closer to the moment when masses will completely abandon the Strip”. Likud MK Amit Halevy has called on Gaza residents to either turn against Hamas or “get out of Gaza” and urged a “crushing blow” that will make “400,000 refugees flee through the Rafah crossing”. And his fellow Likud parliamentarian, Ariel Kallner, looks forward to a second “Nakba”.
