Commissioned by Roman River Music for the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, this work takes as its starting point the colourfully chromatic main theme from Mozart's String Quartet K464. Concealed at the beginning, the theme gradually becomes clearer, Mozart having the final say. First performed by the Quince Quartet, University of Essex Lakeside Theatre, 27 October 2006: that performance wasn't recorded and this is a digital version using NotePerformer.

This is a portrait of a walk from the Suffolk coast, starting between Thorpeness and Sizewell, to the inland village of Friston, through the Suffolk Sandlings. The beauty of this walk will not be here for ever, following the announcement by the Government of their plans to despoil this beautiful landscape for the greater good of the nation with the help of National Grid, destroying the fields to dig trenches and building large substations for Scottish Power and others on good farming land close to the village of Friston. 
The music is an extended instrumental arrangement of Alan Bullard's Keats setting, 'Beauty Joy' for unaccompanied choir.

Alan Bullard: Six Dances For Small Orchestra

These blues-inspired sketches were written for three players and teachers who all worked alongside Alan Bullard at the School of Music at Colchester Institute at the time, as well as teaching at various London music colleges and performing around the world. Each movement depicts one aspect of the character of the dedicatee – the laid-back Stuart Allen, the reflective Charles Hine, and the lively Angela Fussell.

The anonymous twentieth-century melody A New Commandment was written for the well-known passage from St John’s Gospel (chapter 13, verses 34-35), beginning: 'A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you'. This fantasia builds on the theme with colour and drama, using two complete statements and several interludes based on fragments of the melody.

The traditional Irish melody LONDONDERRY AIR (or Danny Boy) has been used for many hymns, of which the most well-known is ‘I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship’. In this fantasia fragments of the melody flank a complete statement of it with varying textures, and a climax subsides to a reflective presentation of its final bars.

Alan Bullard: Londonderry Air - Fantasia for solo piano

The traditional Irish melody SLANE is used for the hymns ‘Lord of all hopefulness’ and ‘Be thou my vision’, and this fantasia quotes from fragments of the melody in a reflective manner, later presenting the melody complete in the left hand, with decorations above, finally dying away to a coda based on the final four notes.

This setting of the traditional French melody uses fast moving and ringing bell-like patterns to bring a feeling of jubilant excitement. Although originally a Christmas carol, Sing we now of Christmas, it is today more often sung as an Easter carol to the words Now the green blade rises. Whichever text is used, the tune radiates joy and happiness.

Quite possibly derived originally from a Scottish folk-tune, 'Amazing Grace' as we know it first appeared in several early nineteenth-century American hymn-tune collections, where it was often known as ‘New Britain’. This fantasia develops the melody in a classical/early romantic manner – a style appropriate to the time of its first publication.
