The whole Russia/Ukraine crisis has been on my mind the last two days. I realized after I finished writing this that it was really an expression of what I've been feeling about this whole situation. I originally intended this to be part of a little string quartet piece, but maybe it should stand alone. Forgive the quality, it's just an audio burn of a MIDI playback- maybe someday I can get some musicians to record it.

Hymn For Kiev

I purchased this Dobro guitar when I was in the Navy Band in Hawaii. I wanted to study with Jerry Byrd, the lap steel player that played with Hank Williams Sr. (and pretty much brought slide guitar to Nashville). I showed up to my first lesson and he said, "Well you don't really want one of those". I didn't realize that his career was built on the ELECTRIC lap steel. Afterwards I purchased an Epiphone electric lap steel from the 1930's and studied with him for a while but I didn't get very at it, I didn't have time to practice that and guitar and he said it really was a different thing. He told me to keep the bar moving, that is one thing I did learn from him.

I had to record this with headphones because I had to mic the Dobro. I used an AKG C414 using an omni pattern to pickup the room. I duplicated the track and ran the second one through reverb to get that bluesy room sound.
