Initially, I thought Gabber wouldn't be my cup of tea, but archive.org had some really interesting modern Gabber tracks under a Creative Commons License. The song that appealed to me the most was from an Indonesian production (Gabber Modus Operandi - Puxxximaxxx, "Hey Nafsu", https://archive.org/details/yesno091).

Ninety-nine percent of the sounds came from the track. I chopped up the snippets with Voltage Modular, stretched them in Ableton, and maltreated them with long effects chains. To add a bit of Ambient cliche, I added the song of a humpback whale (because, why not – sometimes a track needs a pink fluffy unicorn ribbon).

It still sounds rough around the edges, but maybe there's a genre of noise ambient it fits into.

Disquiet Junto Project 0556: Gabber Ambient
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

The idea of a 'day drone' took me straight to the hazy summer drones of sonic youth and yo la tango so naturally i reached for my guitar, tuned a load of strings in unison, recorded to tape loop and slowed down the pitches for extra dreaminess. From there i reacted to what the tape was creating and improvised some tremolo melodies. to me this feels like grassy fields and buzzing insects. i'd be interested to know if that's just my associations or if it's universal?

Hey, I've been recording a commissioned album using my new Ronroco (got it a month ago in Argentina and did my very first recording right [there](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJBdmS7yqtk)) 

Now it's on my studio along with a fellow, old Ronroco I had and a little brother, my charango.

I have to record 5-6 pieces using mostly that instrument with eventual appearances of other instruments and the other two (ronroco+charango).

This prompt gave me the idea of an ambient track, there's this technique of strumming the instrument, widely used on South American folklore, that produces a steady drone, no rhythm just the sustained strumming.

I recorded several tracks of that, along with loads of reverb and delays and some simple arpeggios .

There's a low filtered brass drone (sample libraries) but this is 99% the ronroco droning.

The track started this early after noon is finished now, and it's still day here, so a true day-drone for you.

ronroco day drone - disquiet0647

This week's Disquiet Junto suggested a drone made for the daytime. 

I started with a field recording from my front window. I took the first clean 4 minutes of that, and discovered a lone cicada singing around the 3:30 mark. This is the first cicada I've heard in the neighborhood this year. I supplemented that field recording with some crows that I captured in Virginia a few years ago.

The drone was recorded in a single take on a slide steel guitar with ebow and a collection of pedals. Underneath it all is a sample of a ceramic drum.

The title is taken from the Wikipedia entry for cicadas, describing them as being able to blend in with their surroundings. You can experience this for yourself with a good pair of headphones.
