Hailstones and rain heard from inside a shipping container, Ballycurrin, Co. Galway, Ireland on 1st May 2020 – by Alan Meaney.

“After a few days of sunny weather, the clouds darkened in the morning and I anticipated rain.  I grabbed my recorder and made my way into the shipping container which acts as as a makeshift shed in our back garden.  The hailstones and heavy rain came in waves before lightening off to give way to birdsong.”

‘Harness Your Hopes’ is a series of 6 podcast episodes of 30 minutes investigating and showcasing fiction. Six of the West of Ireland’s upcoming authors have written a new short story inspired by the theme of ‘harness your hopes’. 
On the podcast, the author reads the story and then speaks with the presenter about their craft and inspiration and how the theme inspired them.  The aim of the programme is to place the listener at the heart of the artist’s creative process, while finding common ground and some positivity in these difficult times.

This programme is supported by a Creative Ireland Bursary from Galway County Council.

Sasha de Buyl reads ’Gestation’

Six of Ireland’s foremost female poets and spoken word artists speak about their work and perform a poem inspired by a particular soundscape in a unique location.

FeliSpeaks performs the poem ‘Rain’, written to challenge the people, the place and product of the countries we live in. What have we planted? Are we comfortable with it’s growth?

It was inspired by a rainstorm while taking shelter under a bus shelter in New York. She also touches on finding her voice while taking over the school intercom, the differences between performing poetry and theatre and making a living as a poet in Ireland.  Sound art is provided by the producer in collaboration with the poem.

Reverberations S02 E01 - Felispeaks

'Belly Talk' is a whimsical take on hunger and satiation. By moving from the inner workings of the body, with the gurgles and pangs of ravenousness to the satisfaction of a meal prepared, cooked and gorged, this piece attempts to descibe our corporeal desires.

All sounds were recorded by the artist at home and the sound art takes on an immersive quality by manipulating sounds and volumes to heighten the atmosphere.

Belly Talk

I Ended Up Getting Into An Argument And Getting Into A Fight With Them is a sound art piece that explores themes of anger, violence and toxic masculinty.  It represents the difficulties some people have in coming to a peaceful solution through words, who then resort to their fists.  The sounds are blended into a textured soundscape to represent these topics.
