E Dorian melodeon polkas: Britches / Taureen Derby / Weaver's Delight

A very interesting melodeon tune I learned a couple days ago from Grey Larsen's 2nd album Dark of the Moon, and he got it from an old recording of the Galway melodeon player Michael J. Kennedy (1900-1978).

Wedding processional arranged for performance by The Snug (with Bill Peden and Chelcy Bowles). This informal demo recording is just of Alan Ng on fiddle, played at traditional march tempo - we can also play it more slowly for a modern wedding processional pace. This sample is also much shorter than an actual processional performance.

Chanter's Tune

A set of three jigs arranged by The Snug (Alan Ng, Bill Peden, and Chelcy Bowles) but played here just by Alan Ng on fiddle, for use as a wedding recessional. The jigs are titled Haste to the Wedding, The Rambling Pitchfork, and Joy of My Life. Obviously this is a rough, unrehearsed, first take.

My second-ever informal experiment with looping a trad tune. Note that this is just the loop, not the whole performance. To give you a sense of the flow, I pasted two copies of it together here. (If you downloaded this and played it on auto-repeat, it would flow smoothly from the end into the beginning for ever and ever). That's what a loop is.

West Wind - Grandmom's / Walsh's - 2013 St. Pat's Eve

Irish fiddle has been my specialty since 1993, when I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and got introduced to the addictive world of Irish sessioning. At that point I happily and utterly abandoned classical violin and dove simultaneously into the Irish dance scene, learning ceili and set dancing both on the floor as a dancer and up on stage as a musician. 

My repertoire, while focused exclusively on the Irish tradition, comes from a wide range of sources, ranging from the earliest recordings of Irish traditional music in the early 1900s to my local pub sessions, from modern composers such as Liz Carroll and Charlie Lennon to my own compositions, and also going back centuries in time to the music of Turlough O'Carolan and the old song-air traditions.

My main style influences have been the recordings of the great Irish fiddlers Michael Coleman, Kevin Burke, and Martin Hayes, the Sliabh Luachra fiddle masters, the uilleann piping of Seamus Ennis and Willie Clancy, and the accordion playing of Joe Burke, Joe Cooley, and early Jackie Daly.
