This is a story of transformation and the depth of the human spirit. 

As I was attending a 9 day nonviolent communication training in Germany, I met one of the most inspiring people in my entire life. 
It happened over a lunch break as I started to chat with a participant sitting next to me. A 20 minute lunch turned into 4 hour conversation that left me moved to the deepest parts of my being. 

Why?

It’s not just that the gentleman I spoke to, named Francis, is a 27 year old yoga teacher, who’s helped to found the biggest yoga movement in Africa called Africa yoga project and is now teaching yoga for military in a hope to bring harmony in an otherwise not so harmonious environment, but that Francis has personally lived through more than most people I’ve met in my entire life. His is a true story of personal transformation. 

Being raised in some of the poorest possible conditions on the planet, experiencing hunger and physical suffering for most of his life, having witnessed countless of friends tortured and burned alive and raising from the deepest mental darkness to the astonishing clarity of the mind and becoming an inspiration for thousands of people, can not but move you. 

This interview will shed some light on the life in slums, where people have no water or electricity; where education isn’t available for most and where crime seems to be the most viable option for survival. We talk about how it affects the mind and also how once corrupted, the mind can be brought back to sanity. We speak about drugs in a new light, the importance of the choice of music on the development of consciousness and witness how yoga can truly be a transformative force that changes the life of an individual and society as a whole. 

I hope that this interview will inspire you, make you re-evaluate some of the misfortunes in your own life and give you hope on your personal journey. I also wish, that in the midst of the refugee crisis and all the social discrimination that comes along, so present in the whole world and so sharply emphasised by the media in the second part of this year 2015, one can truly recognise that people are only limited by their thinking and when the thinking upgrades, people upgrade also and the world will follow.
