As I'm still quite a small Fish* in a bigger musical pond here in Berlin, I don't always get to perform for an audience as often as I'd like, especially in the off-season. But, the local Burner community in Berlin has been a really amazing outlet for trying out new sounds and performance elements, and I'm really grateful to be a part of that. Recently, I got the chance to experiment again with live drum programming over a DJ set , this time using Roland's TR8 at times more like a live production tool than just an extra flair on top of the set. For example, the drums in the intro up until about minute 8 are entirely from the TR8, layered with a Pablo Fierro loop and a vocal acapella from Patrice Baumel that I glitched even more with some creative delay.

I crammed and practiced hard for this set and...to be honest, I had a lot of technical difficulties with the drum machine not syncing super well to Traktor on the night of, which rendered snippets of the set unlistenable (at least, to my own self-critical ear afterwards.) Where in the past I'd never admit to 'editing' a set post-performance, these days I'm not really ashamed to say so. (In today's airbrushed Instagram world, it's far more common for DJs these days than you'd think.)What's more, recreating those parts was actually just as fun as doing it live, but in a different way - I learned a lot of new things about the tools I'm working with.

In essence, there's a silver lining to not being overbooked for DJ sets: time. I get a real kick* out of challenging myself to learn, and lately I've been getting into a far better production flow while also familiarizing myself with live performance.

Also, if you're in the US or Europe and have a TR-8S you're willing to part with, let me know. I'm overdue for an upgrade:) And, if you're traveling through Berlin and want to jam, let me know - I've been upgrading the home studio a lot and I always love an excuse to use it!

With the bulk of electronic producers and DJs focusing their efforts on creating energetic dance floor-oriented sounds, Gillian Kharshiing aka Mero’s adherence to mellower textures makes his latest mix for Wild City stand out.

He peppers the largely downtempo mix with bursts of progressive house which creates an engaging contrast. Following mellifluous numbers like Lane 8’s remix of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘Innerbloom’ with the more hard hitting ‘Lisse’ by KAASI, and then softening things again with Chrisitian Löffler’s ‘Haul’, - Mero keeps the intensity rising and receding like tidal waves throughout his mix.

The Shillong-born producer started making music 3 years ago while studying sound engineering in Dublin, where he also performed as part of live electronic collective Modem. His rawness and youthfulness as a DJ is reflected in his mix as he fearlessly and drastically shifts tempos - focusing more on curating atmospheric selections instead of showcasing dexterity. The fact that his original track ‘Trail’ from his debut EP ‘Cumulus’ blends so seamlessly without paling in comparison to the bigger names in the tracklist, is a testament to the skills he has developed over his 3-year long career.
